Before condemning it have a look when your assistant start the car. That looks like the new square type. It's not really a mount, more a restraint. Movement is normal.

Thanks for the replies. Engine was rocking laterally from cold start, have fitted a couple of trouser shims manufactured from some resilient sound/vibration isolation material. I'll have to see how it performs.
Gearbox torque mount has been changed recently, I've changed more engine/gearbox mounts on this D5 than with my previous 6 cars! |

Shims fixed engine movement and no more clunk/click when starting from cold, but created a "buzz" in the cabin, so I'll probably be sssssspending some money on a new mount.

Many have tried ti stiffen up the top mount on D5s and had unacceptable vibration in the cabin. If the motor is moving laterally there is something wrong elsewhere. Are the front and back vacuum mounts working properly?

Lateral as in left to right when looking into the engine bay, so longitudinal for the engine. Shim the top engine mount (head steady) and the movement stops.

Have you checked the mount under the pulley end of the engine? I've seen a few of these fail where the rubber de-bonds from the steel.
