Default 2003 s40 1.9d Cutting Out

Hi All,

First post.
I've had my 2003 1.9d for 2 years now without any problems.
Lately it has started cutting out maybe once or twice on a 40mile trip usually when changing gear or deaccelerating. The rev counter falls to idle between gears as expected and then engine switches off. It starts up immediately again.

I have checked a few things:
1. Fuel supply from the tank under the rear seat where I removed some dirt.
2. Cleaned EGR valve and intake.
3. Replaced rubber O ring just above the shutoff valve (very oily here)
4. Replaced air filter.
5. Fuel filter was replaced 6 months ago.

I have an ELM327 diag box but I can't get a connection to readback error codes but there are no lights on the dash. The car is not down on power, in fact it has never gone better apart from this.

Any help is appreciated. Main dealer is next port of call.

thanks
Mike

Cool

If this cut out is of a very sudden nature then it does sound like an electronic fuel control fault, but I would take a good look at the fuel filter seals first as it could just be sucking in air from a loose lid, drain or split seal. If the filter was blocked the RPM tends to wander around and not suddenly cut out.

What is the mileage of the car. You have checked most things that could cause this. Maybe a faulty high pressure fuel pump or check these 2 posts

thanks guys. I'll stick up some pics and try some of those suggestions.

Car has done 125k miles.
Another thing I should mention is that I had a Tuning box connected for the past year and have since removed it to see if that had any effect on the problem, but no. I don't know if something like that would have caused damage but open to comments.

Car is excellent overall though, surprises everyone who sits into it with the torque available.

its booked into to a Volvo dealer next week so hopefully nothing serious. Its also way too dangerous to be driving something that can switch off any time.

I checked one further thing by disconnecting the MAF in case that was faulty.
The car actually cut out more often with it disconnected.
Does this not mean the car is using a default limp home MAF value ?
This limp home value along with whatever the other fault is results in making the problem worse. Not sure what all this means though.

Volvo dealer looked at it yesterday and found several fault codes.
They cleared all of them but one fault code kept recurring related to the glow plugs. So it looks like it needs a new set.

They cleared all the other fault dtc's and it drove until this evening really well then it started to stutter at idle and cut out again :-(

The dealer cost me 137euro and they fixed nothing at all, only did a look around and itemise all the other things that needed fixing.

Can anyone advise on a software tool to clear DTCs on a 1.9d 2003 s40 ???
I have a elm327 box but any free software I tried doesnt connect.

Also would a set of glowplugs affect driveability ?, I dont think so..

If it was the filter, it probably would have thrown a fuel pressure error, as mine did.
