Default B18 timing gear oil nozzle position

I’ve spent a plesant weekend putting my Amazon’s B18 back together.

I have a fairly irrelevant query. Where, exactly, should the oil nozzle in the timing chest be pointing? Did Volvo ever offer specific guidance?

It was at the angle shown in the photograph when I took the engine apart. I’m showing the position of the hole with the scriber – and thus the direction the oil will squirt out in.

I guess it’s not overly critical, as long as it splurges over the timing gears as they spin past and gets dragged between them.

Try and get the squirt angle to bisect the angle between the two gears, This is more important when using metal gears as it helps to improve the oil cushion and can help keep thing a bit quieter.
Remove and clean out the hole if you haven't done that. Might have a bit of sludge in it.

Thanks for the reply, Derek. I guess about 10° clockwise from its current position is probably about right.

The hole’s tiny and it screws directly into the oil gallery, so I suspect it emits a high-pressure spray than a neat squirt, anyway.

Yes – all the important bits are spotless. I’ve left the outside of the engine alone because I’m lazy.

I agree. Leave it alone. Don’t forget gravity - i.e. trajectory of oil after it has left the nozzle.

^^^Don't forget the rotational direction of the cogs too^^^

Looking at the picture a decent spray would hit the big cog - some of it drop onto the little cog (which would mesh directly into the big one) whilst the big cog directs the remainder up and over...

...thing is - that would be with a decent spray - it would be comforting to know if the nozzle was unblocked and functioning correctly.

I can only think of "messy solutions" to check this though
