Amazon 131 (122s) 1969 2ltr B20B
Can anybody offer me advice on fitting a push button start to my Amazon. To prevent another key snapping off in the ignition I am fitting a button start. The ignition cable is armoured. How do I manage to fit the push button?
Any help greatly appreciated! |

A good idea is to wire your push button starter in parallel with the existing wiring. Advantages are:
a)You don't need to cut the existing loom b)The key start still works if you're in a panic c)If someone else drives your car they won't break the key desperately trying to start it if they don't know about the button To do this on a B18 you can simply loosen the nuts on the back of the ignition switch and slip an extra connector, or undo them completely if you prefer to have another full ring terminal on your wires. The starter is the green wire and you should take a positive from the 'live when the key is turned' terminal. The connection to the cigar lighter will also do. One further advantage of having a button starter is that with the key turned to the left 'garage' position you can spin the engine with the ignition off. Useful if you're nervous after an oil change, for example. Is your car an original B20 with a steering lock? I've never had a key break in one of those or a 140/160 which use the same lock.

Have you had a key break already in your 1969? Bad luck because it should have the later, and vastly more robust, ignition key set up. I cant add anything to the technical side but definitely do it, and hide it underneath, to add to the safety features.

Just did this mod to my '66 122S using the Swedish Embassy kit. VERY simple, used the spare underdash light switch hole as shown on Ron's website... accessible but unobtrusive and innocuous to confound the unenlightened.

A better hole..
On a left hand drive Amazon the cigar lighter can be removed and a button inserted using a 'spare' ignition switch chrome ring to take up the diameter of the large hole. Looks very good and is immediately next to the key switch. Of course you need to fit another cigar lighter / accessory socket under the dash on a bracket but this means that you can fit a clean, reliable new one (or even a double socket). I find the sat nav sometimes has trouble with the 50 year old socket in my British 122S.
