I have subjectively experienced the benefits of premium fuel in several vehicles that I've owned. I have also subjectively experienced one brand of fuel that always seemed to leave the car feeling "flat".

However, objectively none of my data (I have recorded fuel quantity and mileage for every drop of fossil fuel I've put into my own vehicles) supports any benefit or any negative between the different fuel suppliers so far as mpg goes. Of course there are differences, but they pale into insignificance against the statistical errors that exist in the data (eg one pump cuts off sooner than another, bad weather vs good weather, feeling like "having a drive", etc).

I haven't yet given the Leaf a try on Premium. Will report back.

This is purely subjective, but . . . . .

I've used only premium fuel (mainly BP Ultimate) throughout the life of my 1996 960 3Ltr 24v - not to save money but to give the engine the best chance of a long life. At 22 years old and with 175,000 miles on the clock recent work to replace the head gasket revealed the engine internals to be absolutely pristine, with virtually no deposits anywhere. This includes the original fuel injectors and crankcase breather flame trap.

My message - whether or not the use of premium fuels is financially justified from a fuel consumption point of view, it's worth using them if you intend keeping/running the car for a long time.

Again, very subjective, and 'just asking'....

But would the savings made in using regular fuel have more than paid for any engine maintenance - preventative or repair?

Any there and back figure has to take into account the burn off of the first run. Back in the winter took landrover the 114 miles to Cardiff, car normally does A, B and rural lanes or off road miles. Motorway speeds burned off the accumulated crud and it ran sweet as a nut on the way home, returning better mpg and smoother engine.

Twice a year I tow to Scotland with the volvo, never had the same mpg twice. D5 is more than capable of holding 60mph into a stiff headwind if you are prepared to pay for the fuel and sometimes you just want to get there.

I normally run branded fuel but will use supermarket if nessesary, the 8 to 10 p a litre extra for premium I see no benefit in, I do occasionally use Lucus fuel additive to clean the system, while it makes a noticable difference on a dirty engine I have not noticed it on the volvo as that does long runs with very little town driving.

I have used Morrison’s almost exclusively for twenty years, they are 800yds away. Never seen any difference on the occasions other stuff is used. Did a spell of recording on fuelly and no difference whatsoever with the odd tank of BP and Shell here and there.
