Default Dashcam - XC60

HI, all i have been a long time lurker (may have posted years ago when i had a s40 and v40)... However i have now just got my new XC60 R Design Nav and have a question. (so hopefully the good people here may have some advice!)

Dashcams.... now i have seen other threads and they dont really cover placement. I did buy a very nice dash cam (autobot eye) however, there is not really a good position to mount due to all the cameras, laser etc behind the mirror. (i did get the driver support pack) I dont want it to really 'stand out' or block my view in anyway. So any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. If anyone has a good setup, if they could post a picture ?

The XC60 and my V60 Polestar already had a forward facing camera; used for road sign recognition. I'm surprised Volvo didn't offer an option to use that same camera/ lens for general recording .

Yes i am surprise, however i know of no cars that come with camera for recording as standard... or even as an option. The problem i have is the placement, and i dont want some massive screen device in the front spoiling the look of the car. I may end up put it in as a temp measure...(had previous accident that would have been resolved a lot quick if i had had one!)

I have a mobius camera, about the size of a matchbox. It's mounted with velcro to the underside flat surface of the onboard camera module cover, so that from the driver's seat it's completely hidden by the rear view mirror. The angle is perfect for the camera and it's virtually unnoticeable from the outside.

I got a 4m USB cable and it runs easily between the windscreen and headliner, then down the door frame seal, under the glove box and along the center console tunnel to the power socket between the rear seats with a USB power adaptor. It's auto powers down when the ignition is off.

Trickiest bit was finding adhesive tape that didn't go soft with the heat, otherwise it works a treat.

Sounds interesting, would you mind posting a few pics of the setup?

Dashcams are not allowed in many countries for privacy reasons. That seems to be the reason they are not offered as standard.

I'l get a snap for you tomorrow, but it's nothing fancy.

Regarding the legality, provided you don't post it online with reg. numbers showing, you won't have any problems. With road rage on the rise and wise guys trying to initiate a crash for a claim, it's becoming a sensible precaution.

The software could be country specific and for those where it is OK it could have a tick box option to have it on or off.

I would love to have had mine built in as an option rather than as an accessory as I had to opt for. I don't understand the privacy issue. It's never a private matter when you have an accident. All sorts of people are informed.

There are concerns about the camera possible affecting the City Safety module if fitted too close. That's why Volvo fit the accessory dash camera slightly away from the City safety module as I understand.

My attempt at photography..

It's a simple cam, no wireless or fancy options so shouldn't be generating any RF that would impact the volvo systems.
