Top strut mounts
Top strut mounts are something I've not done before. Car has been clunking and I originally thought ball joint however on inspecting the suspension there seems to be a lot of movement going on with the top strut mount. I can rotate the one side with my fingers. Nut is very tight but bar rotates. Other side doesn't. My question is how much movement should there be, if any? They also appear to both be a good half inch higher than on other vehicles I've worked on, is that normal?

That's the spring seat. The strut mount would be the metal plate with a bearing at the center and it's usually long lasting (and not much good choice in aftermarket). Spring seat from Sachs or CRP/Rein, the spring will need compressed. can also ask someone to turn the steering at idle and look at the top washer plate with the hood open, it will be obvious. Or look with a flash light https://youtu.be/kj4JmZS2yM4 As for the clunking, may look first into the end links
