V50 1.6d SE LUX/R Design
Hello,
This is my first post, so forgive me if this has been asked before. I am considering a V50 1.6d in either R Design or SE Lux trim. Having driven both at my local Volvo dealer, I found them better than expected for a 1.6 diesel. I am moving up from a 2004 VW Passat 1.9 TDi and thought I might miss the extra go from the 1.9. I have been a bit disappointed with the economy of my Passat - averaging about 45mpg overall. I'm also impressed with the negligible road tax on the V50. I have a few questions. What miles can I expect from a tankful of diesel from the 1.6 V50 - I drive fairly conservatively these days !! Also any common problems I should look out for before parting with the cash. |

What model year are you looking at as the later DRIVe and D2 1.6 diesels have a different engine to the older 1.6d.
Economy wise, depends on driving style but when I had a V50 D2 R Design courtesy car for a fortnight a couple of months ago I was getting around 50mpg average (trip computer reading). The fuel tank is smaller than a Passat tank by around 10 litres I think, so in theory will give you around 50 miles less per tank but cost around £12 less to fill the tank. |

I'm looking at a car no more than 3 to 4 years old. I would ideally prefer a six speed box but they seem rare. Is there a database somewhere that lists the options fitted to a particular model and at what time model year etc as I'm finding it very confusing.

I have a non stop start Drive SE Lux my10.
It's great. Averaged 66mpg over 70k miles and if careful and driven under right conditions it will acheive nearly 80mpg. No problems with this engine, and for a 1.6 it's very good. Much better than the old 2.0D I had. Pound for pound I mean. Re Lux or R design, Lux has better interior with better sound and extra's but you could argue that R design looks better from the outside. It's all a matter of taste. My car has 16" wheels. I ordered them because the ride is better on our appalling roads. Also tyres are cheaper although the Michelin energy's that came as standard lasted 53k miles and I only changed them because of feathering which made them quite noisey. Rd tax for any of the Drives is a max of £30, but new ones are exempt because they are sub 100g/km CO2. Whatever you choose you won't be disappointed, but if economy is your thing, then you wont go far wrong with either Drive engines( old 109bhp or newer D2 115bhp). Good luck |

V50 09 1.6 eco diesel
The car returns 60mpg per day on my 140 mile round trip to work. Happy with it but sad to see my S60 go

the original 1.6D had 16v and a 5 speed box, the later one get the slightly more powerful 8v with 6 speed box.
our D2 NOT a drive c30 returns around 55mpg on vpower so i would imagine any drive range would be a tad better. in regard to trim levels the drive was a trim level upto MY 2013. However the newer engine was MY2010 iirc. You could consider a 2.0D for more umph but you pay the road tax card and only slightly better MPG than your passat really. |

I've got a 2012 Drive SE Lux.
I'm only averaging around 45mpg at the moment which is disappointing but does seem to be improving with miles (4.5k on the clock now). Just had a couple of days away and got 59mpg over 300 miles according to the trip computer. The tank is 52 litres to 45mpg equals 520 miles from full to empty. Performance is OK but it's no rocket ship Not a big fan of the R Design interior but horses for courses and all that. |
