S40 2.0L Petrol Buyers Advice
Hi,
First post from a prospective Volvo owner. I'm looking to buy the 2Litre petrol and wondered if there are any specific issues I should know about when viewing? Seem to be getting different info on the engine. Some sources saying it's the 1.8 bored out to 2.0l. Others saying its the Duratec and different from the 1.6 & 1.8. Thanks in advance for any info. |

It's a Mazda MZR engine, they also do a 1.8. It's also used as a Duratec in Ford's but it's not a Sigma (the 1.6 is a Sigma) and other than being geared quite low they appear to be pretty robust.

I have a 2.0l petrol S40, I've had no problems with the engine whatsoever and it pulls very well, with 132K on the clock.
It's a great choice, also no cambelt!

Picked a 2007 up yesterday and I must say it drives like new. Really pleased with it.
One question for any of you with the 2.0l. Do you have an engine undertray? The oil filter looks very exposed, but I read somewhere that only the Diesels had them? Thanks |

Yes, only the diesels had undertrays fitted unless you had the 2.4i or T5 petrol engines. The fittings are all there though, I assume you have the MTX75 gearbox (5-speed manual)? If so then you have the exact same setup as me. I bought the following and it fits perfectly: The red square looking fittings pop into place at the front of the car (under the radiator) - mine already had some in position but I popped out the old ones and put new ones in anyway. The two fittings at the back, you can screw directly into what's already there. Then the last 2 fittings are the sides you need to take out the screws that are already there for the wheel arch liners (T-25 IIRC) and then put the undertray in position and screw it all up again through the undertray and wheel arch liner into the retaining clip on the otherside. It will all make sense when you see it. If you have any more questions just ask!

That, my friend, is a superb bit of info. Thank you very much indeed!
Good bit of gearbox info as well, as yes, it's the five speed manual. Can't get over how it drives. It's a 2007 and feels like it just rolled off the production line. Checked the MOT history and it's only ever had one advisory for a tyre. Seems to have been looked after meticulously by the main dealer. That's why I couldn't believe the undertray had been left off. Thanks again. Last edited by ShawnFZX; Jul 6th, 2017 at 10:10. |

I was surprised with how well mine drove too when I bought it with 118K miles on the clock! Mine had a full dealership service history and similarly only had advisories a few times for tyres due to the mileage being done on it. What's weird is that I phoned my local dealership to get a quote for the undertray directly from them (£90+ btw!). They told me on their system it should have had an undertray when it left the factory but I don't believe it based on what I've heard from people on here. Due to the mileage on my car I'm getting a TerraClean this summer so it will be interesting to see what difference that makes to the "newness" feel of the car

I'd be interested in knowing how the terraclean goes as I've been considering it for my other vehicle (Nissan Elgrand). But can't work out if it's witchcraft or not!
