Reading this full thread does intimate that even the franchised dealers are not immune to ignorance of the complicated nature of this box.

It has been suggested to me that the service schedule is 3 years or 50,000 miles whichever comes first but I have no guarantee that is correct.

Popping into any main dealer is not that easy anymore as all the local franchises have closed. The main reason I use this local garage after my cars get to three years old is not cost but convenience. It is five minutes walk from my home.

Should the need arise there is a Ford main dealer in the area who may be a better option.

The service schedule for my V50 from the main dealer shows a change of gearbox oil and filter at 50,000 and 100,000 miles.

My experience shows that the more these cars are driven with a fault, the bigger the likely bill. It seems that failure of a plastic part between the clutches is the most likely suspect. If that alone is the problem, they can be fixed by SigTrans for as little as £700. Once gear damage occurs, the bill skyrockets.

I spent ages looking for gearbox specialists who could fix these boxes, but it wasn't until I spoke to the independent dealer from which I bought the car that I found one. I do hope iadom can find someone in the North.

I doubt that Ford are better equipped than Volvo to sort these boxes, but would be very pleased to be proved wrong.

That does give me a bit of hope. I had only just left home when the fault occurred and returned home at once, only driven about 1/4 of a mile.

I will do a bit of digging around for auto box specialists.

I can confirm that the service schedule for this box is 4 years or 50,000 miles.

And a little more hope this morning, I started the car to take it down to the local garage who did the last service, it is less than 1/4 mile away.

It had not been driven since Saturday afternoon, I was able to select reverse and driving in forward gears was quite smooth. The Transmission Power Low warning light did come on as I tried to put it into reverse outside the garage to test it but I am now hopeful that no major damage has been done to the gearing etc.

Just awaiting their observations now.

Also been in touch with Sigtrans who do seem to be very helpful. I have located a couple of highly recommended DSG/Powershift box specialists in this area but Sigtrans will collect and deliver if need be.

That sounds very promising. I do hope it works out well for you.

Can you post the names of the other specialists. I usually get good results on web searches, but completely failed to find anyone who would touch a powershift.

And it seems to be getting even better, it looks like both myself and more to the point, the garage concerned have got VERY lucky.

They replaced the gearbox oil and filter late yesterday afternoon and initially the fault message did not clear. The car was left overnight and then tried again today and it appears to be working perfectly.

I have just taken it for a 30 minute run and it was as smooth as usual, reverse selection was swifter than it has been for a few days now.

As I have a hire vehicle for a couple more days they are going to keep it and try it after standing overnight to see how it performs from cold.

It does appear that some Volvo garages are not up to speed on these boxes either as regards service. They contacted the nearest main dealer franchise to inquire about the correct oil and filter and whoever they spoke to had no idea what the answer was. He said they had never used either oil or filter and was dismissive of their question until it was pointed out to him that he should check the Volvo Service Schedule.

Fingers still crossed but not as tightly.

As I am thinking of getting a D5 but am, as yet, unsure whether to get an auto or manual I have been searching the forum for interesting topics - and found this one. I am thinking of getting a D5 circa 2006/7 with about 80,000 on clock. First of all - sorry for ignorance but the cars I am looking at have Geartronic autos - that is different from the Powershift in the thread is it? If so does a Geartronic generally suffer any similar issues at about this age? Is the manual box in D5 reliable given the torque it has to handle? Sorry if I am showing my ignorance here but any guidance would be gratefully received! Cheers Fred

No worries Fred, if you don't know anything here then it is good to ask as there is always some helpful chap or chapess to help you along.

The only engine that has the powershift box is the 2.0D, all other automatics in the C30/S40/V50/C70 range are geartronic boxes (Aisin Warner).

What I would say is if you have the need for an automatic then they are a very capable box but are now showing their age compared to newer much smoother boxes.

If it is a case of you have no real need for automatic but are teetering on the edge of thinking about lazy driving then I would say get the manual. You will get that much extra fun and a touch more economy from the manual box. The manual box handles the torque the best, the geartronic box is actually limited to the torque that it transfers.

If you like involved and spirited driving then you really want to opt for manual.

I have a V50 (year 2008) with powershift. During I am driving suddenly all lights turn on dashboard and power is gone (miss engine). It is just for a second and after the car is going on but it can be repeated few times during my way. Generator was changed, powershift was changed by Volvo in guarantee. But I still have a problem and I am afraid to drive because this time the car stop for a second and if someone will be behind me, he can hit me because my brake lights are not used this time.
Is anybody could help me or had a similar problem before? Dealer is looking for a problem but so far no solution.

Thanks in advance
