I brought one of these Bluetooth kits for my HU-803 - it replaces the CD multichanger function. The steering controls still work and do track skips/volume control for the streamed content.

I've no experience with an HU-850 but I'm really pleased with how well it works on an HU-803.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.

In the end I've gone for another HU-850 (a Japanese one?!) and a Bluetooth/Dab unit, it'll do me hopefully as I'm not in the car that much, but figured this way I'd have Bluetooth music connectivity, CD, Dab and still keep my centre speaker.
