Default B230E Engines

Does anyone know, is the B230E engine fitted to the 740's or was it only fitted to the 240's? If the engines are interchangeable, is there any issues I need to be aware of such as mounting brackets, ancillary fittings etc.

Hi Christof - the B230E was fitted to 740s the engine mounts are different but just a bolt on swap. The big difference is dizzy was on back of head. This can be removed and the blanking plug fitted. The 240 dizzy can be fitted in its normal place, however the intermediate shaft will probably have to be changed for the 240 one which has the drive for the dizzy.

Hi Mike,

This brings me back to conversion ideas. I didn't realise it was such a simple job to move the dizzy from one place to the other on the 8 valve engines.

Would the same procedure follow for the 16 valve twin cam, or are the differences too great?

The 16v block does not have the intermediate shaft. The only way round this is to either cut the bulk head or swap the bottom end for a B230 block and fit the 16v pistons.

The issue of fitting 16v to 240 is not straightforward. To fit it as it comes out of 740GLT would require engine mountings making, and as Dai says dizzy can't be moved so would need to cut bulkhead. Also clutch master cylinder is in way. Also would need the engine management system fitting. As regards fitting head tn B230E block there is a problem with pulley wheel on the 16v being for a round toothed belt on the cam pulley whilst the B230E runs on square teeth! All the problems have been overcome - indeed I hope to being going this route soon. Watch this space!!

Thanks Dai, and Mike.

Having seen the cutaway drawings of the 16v, and looking at one in situ (in a late 740) I suspected there were some serious hurdles to be jumped.

As I'm just as the beginning of this particular journey, I think I'll take your advice Mike - and watch this space.
