annoying noise !
Hi everyone -
A ringing / fluttering sound is comming from my 240 estate (1992 b200F)whilst driving in gear (all gears/ all speeds). As soon as the clutch is pushed in, it stops. I'm sure it is not pinking. It sounds just like the noise a heater fan on low makes - honest I've checked and it's not the fan, and seems to come from deep behind the dash or just into the engine compartment and not deep within the engine itself. As it seems to be loudest when I listen around the righthand side of the steering wheel - my initial thought was that it was either comming from the speedeo or rev counter? But maybe it could be the clutch? I know noises are so difficult to solve like this, but has anyone else has a similar problem? Cheers John |

RE: annoying noise !
Wotcher. The fact that you say the sound stops when you depress the clutch indicates clutch release bearing noise; not necessarily terminal but worth changing when next you change the clutch.

I've had clutch release bearing noise for the last 100,000 miles!
Not all the time, just when the clutch is halfway in. You can quieten it by applying oil from a can down a bit of extension tube, after pulling back the clutch lever rubber cover. |

RE: annoying noise !
Thank you both for the advice - I read it that I don't need to worry too much, I'll wait for the clutch to need sorting.
In the mean time I will try your oil tip Clifford. Cheers John |

RE: annoying noise !
Good luck - it might not work for you - no guarantees.
Just a few drops, and I'd start the engine immediately afterwards to spin off any surplus. |
