Clean bottom?
Hi,
Having searched for some time I have just bought myself a nice 240GLT. I was wondering how best to look after the underside and wheel arches? I was considering a pressure wash, a thorough drying out and subsequent applicaiton of underseal. Maybe just a coat of Waxoyl would be adequate? Any advice would be much apreciated. Thank you. Paul |

RE: Clean bottom?
If underseal is in good condition leave alone - rear wheel arches start rusting where two parts are spot welded together - keep clean inside - polish lip any signs of corrosion waxoyl area but repair before any rot gets a chance to take hold. Important to make sure screen doesn't leak (or heater) as either will rot floors out. Pressure wash crap from around screen surround trim as there are drain holes at bottom outside corners which can block causing rusting at corners. Do not remove trim as clips are bonded with screen and break easily. Bottoms of front wings tend to trap dirt and also then corrode. I'm sure others will add to list! Best of luck

RE: Clean bottom?
Thanks for the tips Mike, I shall spend some time now investigating those areas and get the old girl fully protected.

RE: Clean bottom?
Keep sill drain holes clear, especially if you have used Waxoyl inside them.
Pull back all the carpets and every plastic inspection cover, clear out leaves etc, squirt in Waxoyl. There are small rubber access plugs at the bottom of the rear of the rear door posts, just above the sill inside the door jamb. You can remove them to get Waxoyl into the favourite rust spot where the rear wing meets the sill. Squirt Waxoyl from inside the boot along the line of the leading edge of the rear wings, where it disapears into a black hole at the side of the seat. Check wiper spindle grommets are sealing where the spindles pass, both ourtside and more particularly under the dashboard. Pressure hose dirt from around the top of the rear shockabsorber mounting points. As Mike sayus, pay particular attention to leaks from the windscreen area. The exact source is often hard to pinpoint - it may be the screen seal itself, or a blocked drainage duct, or leaking wiper spindle, or faulty door seal down the A post. Be aware that once water gets in it lodges under the carpet, hidden because of the metal channels for wires and heater ducts, which lift the carpet off the actual floor. Just because the carpet is dry doesn't mean there isn't a large permanment puddle of water underneath it. Inaccessible section in front of the rear bumper, behind the back of the boot edge. This can totally rot away before you even notice it. Tail gate bottom, of course. Inner sill edge just above the rear jacking points. The list is endless, but it is worth taking stock of a new aquisition and going very carefully all over it. Good luck! |
