XC60 Tailgate not opening
Hi All. First post, new member. My 64 plate XC60 has a minor but very annoying problem. The tailgate, intermitantly will not unlock one day but without any interferance it will then work ok for weeks. It will be no suprise that it never fails by the time I get it to the main dealer. Apparently it is an intermitant failure of the conection between the ECU and the relevant module.
Any ideas please, other than change all the potentialy affected parts. |

I had that happen to me once. I tried to open the tailgate and it tried but failed. Any further attempts I just got clicks from the tailgate handle, but no action.
I drove it around the block. Initially I had tailgate open warning on dash (even though it wasn’t). By the time I got back home the message was gone and the tailgate opened straight away. So, here’s my theory. I think at the first attempt the lock was not able to open, but was enough to tell the ECU that it was open. Any attempts after that failed because ECU thought it was already open, and didn’t trigger the catch release. That got reset somehow (cycling ignition, driving, who knows?) In my case, I think the first failure was due to load compartment rubber cover being misplaced and putting pressure on the tailgate that prevented the catch from releasing. So, if you have a cover, make sure it is pushed well in to the luggage compartment before closing tailgate. Or take the cover out for a while and see if the situation improves. Cheaper than parts darts.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunatly my boot lock makes no noise and there is no feeling of the switch underneath the cover. It is just dead. That position lasts for any time from minuets to days but always comes right by the time I get to the main dealer!!

My XC60 tailgate will not open
Hi
I bought my volvo two weeks ago from a used car dealer. I did loads of research before looking at any models and decided on leather trim, no sunroof (as they apparently leak) auto box etc. I eventually found after weeks of looking (I live near Lands' End so options are limited, especially in the current virus pandemic) It was a 2009 D5 SE LUX AWD Auto. One owner from new, full volvo service history with 80,000 miles. The car is immaculate. Drove a hundred miles to view the car, Checked the car from top to bottom, felt carpets for damp etc all good. Went to open the tailgate and discovered it would not open , not on the boot catch, key fob or the button on the dashboard. Completely dead. First thought it was a fuse, checked ok. Told the salesman I couldn't take the car as the tailgate won't unlock (vital to us as we have dogs) . He said he would pay for any repairs to get the tailgate working, I got him to sign a statement to that effect. Took the car and drove it home, during journey received call from salesman who had located a volvo specialist not too far from where I live. Told me to take it in, he'd cover all costs. The garage checked it out, no fault codes came up for anything. He had the car in for the day and found the windscreen was letting in water. Windscreen was removed and re-fitted. Tail gate still does not open. When you put a live to the tailgate catch it will release and open. It is not an auto tailgate. Anybody have any ideas, I'm desperate to get get the tailgate working. I have no issues at all either with the guy who sold it me , or the garage who has since worked on it. its just one of those unfortunate events. |

My car had the tailgate switch give me many problems and after a few years of it working on and off I replaced the switch with a brand new unit which cost £100. The switch is built into a unit together with tailgate lights and once replaced by myself has worked perfectly. The only problem that maybe linked to the replacement is that the interior tailgate lamp stopped working about a month after replacement of the lock although the bulb is fine.

BR, many thanks for signposting me to this video, I'll check the earth.
Once I've checked the earth (cheaper option) I'll have a look at tailgate switch. If I fix it I'll let the forum know. Many thanks Kev |

Surely a Volvo dealer would be able to fix this, albeit possible at a high cost to the car dealer who sold it to you?
