Default 163bhp v 185bhp

I have a 2002 D5 SE with a 2401cc engine and 163bhp. There is nothing much wrong with it but as MOT time approaches I am conscious that it may not meet exhaust emission criteria.
I would like to buy a later model ( although it may not necessarily rule out exhaust emission failure ) which is a 2007 D5 SE with a 2401cc engine but I notice the bhp is 185bhp.
What is the difference in terms of exhaust emission, fuel consumption, no of gears, etc? Also, how do you identify the bhp without seeing any paperwork?

Euro 3 with no DPF passes the smoke density test much more easily than a D5 with a DPF as the rules are more relaxed for non DPF.

If you're worried about passing emissions and you like your current car, stick with it.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand the logic here. If "Euro 3 with no DPF" is the 2007 car, which I assume it is, then surely it contradicts the next paragraph?

emissions standards:
https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/e...ons-standards/

the older car is the Euro 3, from what I understand the newer car would be euro 4

incidentally there was some discussion and useful info about engine types here:

I just checked to see if the later car would be more expensive on insurance ( thinking it wouldn't ) and to my surprise it would increase 73% from £188 pa to £326 pa. ( Aviva allows you to check on line )

Would this be due to bhp increase? Seems to be a big jump based only on year and corresponding value of car!

check tax as well IIRC I read somewhere it jumped up a lot from a certain year onwards

ps how are you paying less than £200p/a ?? I want to say how old are you but perhaps politer to say have you got a lot of years no claims and many years of driving under your belt

mines around £500 i think but that's at 39 with a fairly recent bus related incident (within last 5 years) . i say i think because I'm on a shared policy with my parents to keep costs down. mum pays it up front I pay her monthly

You are right about the insurance but I do shop around and change insurer every year!

No one seems to know about a 185bhp engine. It's not in my Haynes manual but it does exist as many S60s are advertised with a 185bhp engine.

Your assumption is incorrect and what I said still applies.
Euro 3 D5 with no DPF is what you currently have and I'm recommending you keep based on your concerns in your original post.
The MOT emissions test is a smoke density test which it passes very easily as an amount of smoke is allowed within certain criteria.

A 2007 will be a Euro 4 D5 with a DPF and stricter emissions rules for MOT i.e. No visible smoke allowed.
