I’ve actually adjusted the striker plate to lift the door as it closes, not ideal but seems to work ok.
Have found hinge repair kits are available, but I can’t feel play in the hinges. These need pressing in though and therefore the door taking off. Not doing that!

Today’s job, trying to see if I have a leaking induction pipe using a home made smoke machine.
Looks like the run I’m testing is leak free.

Gave up on the intake pipes for now, got a fairly big strip down to fit this blooming thing, so will have a dig around once a lot of the clobber down the back of the engine is removed.... it’s the cooling system thermostat if you wondered.

Why oh why do they hide consumables in such awkward places? Oh I know, they can charge more to change them.

What is it that this extremely complicated and expensive device does that the traditional throw away unit placed in an easily accessible three bolt removable domed housing fixed permanently to the engine has been doing for cars for the last 75 years? Is there a convincing explanation why Volvo have done this?

Default Thermostat replacement

...and so it starts

Trying to do bits of the strip down before work and at dinner break then over weekend...

Currently got the battery and box off, air box and throttle body off. Next step is the EGR valve.

Got a lot of water collected in one of the bulkhead bolt channels, need to see why that’s collecting water when it goes back together.

Nightmare job!

Vida instructions seem like they’ve been written for a loose engine, there’s no way to reach the back of the EGR valve with the metal bulkhead at the back of the engine in place. Currently struggling to get that removed. Having to drill out that bolt which was in a pool of water.

I’m currently thinking that this job could be quicker by taking the engine out!

Dark now, time to give up for the night.

EGR valve has to come out in order to access the thermostat assembly if anyone wondered.

If anyone decides to DIY this in the future - change your mind now!

Had about 3 hours at it today, too cold.

Can’t get a pipe from the bottom of the EGR valve off, it’s part of the thermostat housing assembly, so i think a saw will be going through it later.

This explains why Volvo charge £400 upwards to do this job!

Finally got the bugger out! The ‘stat assembly is bolted to the engine with a T30 torx head bolt, you can’t see it so have to do it by touch.

Had to cut one of the pipes to the EGR valve which I still haven’t been able to free. Got it soaking in penetrating fluid.
Also EGR is fairly gunked up, what would people recommend whilst it’s in bits?

I’ve come across Mr Muscle degreaser being used... generous application & allow it time to do its thing. Make sure you have plenty of old cloths for wiping/scrubbing & wear gloves! It can be a dirty task, so a sheet on the floor probably wouldn’t be any harm either.

There’s EGR cleaning products you can buy from places like Halfords too.
