I remain baffled that anybody would go to the effort of a two part fabrication with dis similar metals. Was the belief that aluminum rims were not 'up to the job' or was this some kind of cost reduction strategy? Labor and machining costs in the late 60s would have had to be incredibly low to justify the extra effort of having to rivet an aluminum center to the steel rim as opposed to the cost of a one piece aluminum casting.
Will find some uses for them.

Not sure what the thinking was, not a good design. The MGB and Scimitar folks are still using them so I have hope. 🙂

Forum;

I agree with 142g...the wheel in the picture of first posting should be gracefully retired, and serve further as a coffee table in a Mancave, or some similar decorative duty, but it should never again have a tire mounted, and turn on a road!

142g; Yes...accepting a design with Galvanic action built-in was not one of the brighter moments of whomever signed off on that for Volvo (I guess even they have moments of weakness!).

Cheers

I have a set of the dreaded 1970 1800E wheels which I am about to put in the for sale board. I don't imagine the wheels themselves are worth much, but they have brand new centres and new correct chrome finishing rings from Brookhouse, plus 4 Federal 165x15 tyres with minimal wear.

Message for Derek UK really.
Derek this just popped into my head, you mention that you used to X Ray wheels while you worked at GKN, would it be possible to ascertain the actual condition of these cloverleaf wheels by X Raying them?
Obviously the only way I could do so was by destroying one.
Thanks.
David.

I spoke with our NDT vendor about doing some and it wouldn't be possible to do. They had a couple of ideas of other techniques they were going to try for me but mine looked fine so I didn't proceed with it. Check that the join area is water tight and rivets are tight is probably as good as you can do.

Basic answer is no. We only made the centres and that's what got x-rayed. If you tried an x-ray shot on film at an angle through one of the rivet positions you would have to take 2 films as a different exposure would be needed for the alloy and the steel. The corrosion and would likely show as a diffused area but you probably could differentiate between very good and very bad. It's the ones in between that would be a problem. the #1 eyeball is as good a tool as any in this case. If you can see any sign of corrosion consider it u/s. If there are 5 rivets you only need one of those positions to be bad.

If your wheels are really good visually an owner who wants to use them as show wheels only might make you an off. Otherwise you have a set of tyres, centres and rings that you can repurpose or sell individually.
