Thicker Oil in a high mileage D5?
Hello all,
My V70 D5244T4 has now done 247k miles and is still running on the genuine 0w30 Volvo engine oil. I’m wondering if it’s now time for a thicker oil due to this higher mileage engine. What oil are you guys running your D5 on instead of 0w30? I was thinking of going with 5w40 or 10w40 low ash |

Maybe 5w30 but no thicker.... no need to change from the point of view of the major bearings, going thicker might affect the tappets and accelerate cam/follower wear....

I was hoping to slow down wear to the tappets by using thicker oil. I think it’s just starting to get a very very little tappet noise :/

Leave it be.
0w30 is best. 5w30 is only thicker when cold which is when you want it thinner. If you were to go 'thicker' that would be 0w40 A3/B4 instead of 0w30 A5/B5. Should not be necessary, but if you feel the need, 0w40 A3/B4 is the next step up. Further, you wont get a 5w40 or 10w40 'low ash' (you mean saps levels) neither do you need to, these use a full saps oil (A/B spec), and mid saps (C2, C3) has been known on occasion to cause rather than prevent trouble with the dpf. Low saps (C1, C4, C5) oil is not at all appropriate. Last edited by AndyV7o; Aug 9th, 2020 at 00:31. |

Are you sure its tappets and not injector noise/knock

Well there might not be enough deposits to see yet, I guess youve taken engine cover off and had a good look all around each one?
Other possibility if injectors aren't leaking is exhaust manifold/gasket. The euro 4 do suffer with tappets though, so its not impossible it is those. |

Possibly worn/failed lifters
Worn/failed lifters are not uncommon on the Euro4 D5. I had to replace all of mine and some were in a very bad way. One of No1's exhaust lifters was highly deformed and all had either seized or had collapsed completely.
The result is the exhaust valves do not remain open long enough to fully expell the gases and it therefore makes it's way out of the Induction system when the inlet valves open. This is what causes the noise. The biggest problem I've seen as a result of this was a lifter being ripped through its seat wall, causing irreparable damage to the head. |
