noise d5 185cv
Hello everyone and happy summer !!
I just got what for me is a wonderful v70 III d5 185cv Unfortunately, however, it has 3 problems that have not played me in fully enjoying the car. The first, perhaps what alarms me most is a persistent ticking in the upper area of the engine (injectors area) present at all engine speeds. When the car is cold, you hear less but after a few minutes this annoying and worrying noise occurs. Another sensation is that the engine does not turn uniformly even when accelerating from a stop; https://streamable.com/xemtm8 The second is that after starting the car, after about 1 minute the engine makes a noise as if it were rumbling. This is also noticeable from the inside. As if there was a rumble in fact Third and I hope the last problem is the steering; when I turn the steering quickly it becomes heavy as if there was no power assistance and then it resumes proper operation. The car has 208000km sorry for my poor english |

If you have a Volvo you need VIDA/DiCE
(This is a standard text reply which I have saved for all new forum members asking for advice with their cars.)
Volvo cars are complex electronic devices with numerous sensors, electronic control units (ECU) and multiplex wiring systems. Such cars have fault logs within their ECUs which can be interrogated to identify the faults which the car is presenting. To do this you need diagnostics software and a dedicated connection cable for your laptop. Volvo have developed a dedicated system for their cars called VIDA which is connected to the car via a cable called DiCE. You can buy VIDA/DiCE on the internet for about €60. You will need a laptop which either runs Win7 or can run it on a virtual OS like Oracle VM VirtualBox. Because VIDA is dedicated to Volvo cars it can tell you not only what the existing faults are but also how to repair them and it contains the complete inventory of spare parts for your car. Be warned it is a clone of the real thing with all that entails but it provides the same extensive support that a Volvo dealer can offer and for a fraction of the price. With VIDA you will only need to ask questions on the forum appertaining to how other members carried out the work to repair the faults which VIDA identified. You won’t have to rely on remote diagnostic guesses from owners who might or might not have had a problem which they might think was similar to yours. It will save you time and money and even if you are forced to take the car to a garage, you will be able to tell them what faults are present and not leave them to decide what they will or will not do to your car. I realise that this doesn’t answer your specific question but it might still be the best piece of advice that you are likely to get on the forum. The noise around the injectors sounds like an injector fault and the steering might be low level fluid in the steering box reservoir which you could check but if it is low you might have a leak. If any of your faults originate from a system which is sensor monitored, then the ECUs will hold faults logged because the readings were out of range.

Correct power steering fluid?
With regards to your steering becoming heavy, are you using the correct power steering fluid? You can't put standard PSF in a D5 as it doesn't have a PSF cooler and the fluid overheats, causing extremely heavy steering. You have to use a MVCHF type.
Also, the engine noise will noticeably change after 1-2 mins at idle due to the EGR valve closing. |

Re the power steering being heavy. The P3 is known to have a problem with the power steering in that the fluid will attack the metal pipes and small bits of debris formed can block the filter in the reservoir . Flushing the system can help . The fluid should be a green colour , if its black or discoloured then definitely flush the system . It might sort it but its possible that some damage has been done to the pump and the steering rack. I flushed my 2007 P3 power steering when it started to go heavy and also added some Slick 50 power steering additive . this made steering quieter and smoother for the rest of my ownership of the vehicle .
The rumbling noise you mention may be the power steering pump cavitating due to the blocked filter in the reservoir. Worth checking . If this fails then a new set of pipes , pump or rack will be needed , very expensive . The other problems will probably benefit from have a diagnostic check
