XC70 Boost Pipe
I carried out some maintenance on my XC70 over the weekend and removed the intake pipes and crankcase / breather heater nipple as it needed a bit of gasket sealer applied. All went as planned.
I also had a quick check around the engine and underneath to note some oily residue on the rubber hose from the turbo to the hard pipe. I removed this hose to clean up the area and noticed that 1 of 3 brackets on the hardpipe is broken allowing some vibration/ movement on the rubber hose connection. The turbo outlet is completely clean and dry so the residue must be the result of a small leak under boost pressure. Volvo only supply the pipe with replacement hoses fitted at a cost of £355.00 I don't think a replacement is urgent however, is changing this worth the expense or maybe a new bracket/clamp can be made up to support the hard pipe? |

Its definitely worth a clamp/bracket for now & keep your eye on it. If that works fine for a while, then keep the money in your pocket!
Check the condition of the rubber hose too.

Thanks, I was thinking about getting the bracket welded back on. Fitter at work ask me to check pipe material.... If not then I have a few ideas on a clamp/bracket.

The oily covering in the pipe is just crank case fumes from the breather condensing ...

A quick update...
I removed the metal boost pipe between the turbo and the intercooler and have found the problem causing the oil residue on the rubber hose and maybe/probably the intake on top of the engine. You will see from the photos attached that in addition to the broken broken bracket, the metal pipe has a small hole where the bracket tab is fixed. I thought something wasn't quite right over the past few weeks even though the idle was smooth and motorway cruising was ok Nothing a bit of welding won't fix Last edited by sellxc70; Mar 7th, 2021 at 19:17. |
