Default new C70 with problem

Hi Folks,
picked up a '99 C70 convertible today. 2.5t auto. 67k miles. Drove it 250 miles home, including through the centre of London, without any problems. When I got home I looked the car over and did a few minor things - checked the air filter, tried, unsuccessfully, to change the gear selector bulb, fitted a lights on alarm. Started the car to move it into the garage and it ran like a bag of spanners. It barely started and just wouldn't idle smoothly - it was hunting all over the place. Higher revs were better but seemed like it was missing on a couple of cylinders.
I am hoping I might have knocked a connector in the engine bay - any ideas?
I know these can suffer from throttle body problems and it seems to be the same sort of symptoms, but worse! Given the journey I had I would have thought this sort of major problem would have shown itself?

Start with having a look at the Mass Airflow Sensor an the wiring to it as this is near the air filter which you changed - Mike

thanks guys,
had a fiddle round today with no joy. I notice that when I put the ignition on there is a high pitched whistle which seems to come from the throttle body switch area, then when you put the ignition off there is a hum for a moment or two then a clunk from the same area.

Sounds like ETM Failure fella, have any warning signs come up?

Get the codes read ad you'll know for sure what it is, but from my experience, that sort of erratic behaviour only happens when either the MAF sensor has gone to ghost, or the ETM (throttle body) has done the same thing.

You said yours is a '99 model, so will be ME7 engine management with Fly By Wire throttle, not a cable.

If it Is the ETM, then search the forum as the subject has been covered in great depth.

Good luck.

Hi Folks,
took the car to local indy and had the codes read - but there weren't any! He said symptoms and the noises pointed to ETM failure.

Contacted Volvo UK who said they wouldn't help (for various reasons)

Took the unit off tonight (thanks to the helpful hints elsewhere on this site!) It has a white sticker so it is the original one. It was FULL of oil and gunk. Am going to send it away to be overhauled.

Is there anything else I should do while it is off - anything else to clean out or check?

If possible, have the inlet manifold cleaned along with the pipes going to the ETM unit. When I had the ETM replaced on my old V70, the garage cleaned all the pipes going to the ETM and the inlet manifold, else the dirt in the pipes will just clog up the ETM with crap, and slow the butterfly valve's reaction time down taking down the cars performance, putting more pressure on the butterfly flap and causing the ETM to wear quicker.

I've just bought my C70 and am gonna give it back to the garage to clean the ETM as it does make a difference to the longevity of it.

Good luck, hope it all works well once it is back in your car. I'm waiting til my ETM goes, and will be taking it to BBA-Reman or another gentleman on this forum who can fit the contact-less mod so the ETM doesnt play up again...
