angle gear
we just bought a 2006 xc90 three days ago and discoverd that the front wheels spin and rear wheels dont under exceleration. I was told it was possibly the angle gear. What and where is that located and what is the average cost of repair? The car has 84,000 miles.

Actually, it's probably the splined shaft coupler between the gearbox and the bevel gear. That bit is hidden inside the gearbox so you can't see it, the bevel gear is on the back of the gearbox with the prop shaft coming out of it to the rear wheels, you'll have to crawl under to see it. (or google for pictures)
If it's not done any damage to the shafts the coupler is relatively cheap at ~£100, but the labour is gonna hurt your wallet more. Get a quote from an indie and a main stealer if not several. If it's worn the shafts, which is a 50/50 possibility, then it's really gonna hurt, you'll be over a grand for repairs... You'll only know the extent of the damage by stripping it down, there's no way to know before hand. Of course it could be something REALLY simple. Check your handbook and find the fuse for the Haldex unit which is the bit of wizardry that puts the power to the rear, they have been known to blow the fuse and lose your AWD that way. You know about keeping the same make and model of tyre all round don't you?
