Default Can't line up strut top rubber mount on sprint

Hi,

Replacing the struts on a 2011 XC90. When i compress the spring using a pair of spring compressors I can't get the rubber cap piece onto the top of the shock absorber AND align the rubber to fit over the spring. Does this matter? Will it 'pop' into place? Been trying for a couple of hours - moving the spring compressors into different positions etc - but just can't get it to line up.

Any advice?

Hi,
I replaced the strut top and bearing on my XC90 last year and had no issue but you do need to have both ends of the spring located properly in their respective stops

Why don't you fully assemble it but leave the spring under compression and then slacken the compressors bit by bit so as to allow movement and adjustment until it all lines up safely and correctly.

I have a feeling that this may work and minimises any safety risk.👍

Maybe the compressors don't grab at the right place on the spring. Also be sure to use the right brand, Sachs or CRP/Rein. See this for the compressors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxjV7OjzY-o

Fit the bearing and the rest of the hardware before releasing the tension from the spring. It should work ok then.

Thanks, that seemed to work. New strut on the car and has stopped the annoying suspension noise!
