Default Swapping column auto to manual

It's an option I guess?

Can anyone tell me the extent of work?

Experience of doing this?

Will,

I swapped a 164 from auto to manual years ago. It's not a scary job, provided you have all the parts.

Gearbox
Crossmember (or welding to modify original)
Propshaft (or modify original)
Clutch
Pedal box
Clutch cable

On the car I swapped, all the relevant captive threads were already in the shell, I'd be confident that the same would apply to yours.

Probably, the auto 144 has a different rear axle ratio. You don't have to change the axle, but if you don't the speedo would under read

John
