hi, is the D4 2WD with weatherproof/all season tyres the way to go these days

For me it was and 'probably' still is. Fuel economy, £30 VED, performance on a par with a D5 AWD and fitted with Nokian Weatherproofs. It's only failed for me on slushy snow, a very wet grassy field and a steep rough verge. Of course, AWD would have sorted all three 'fails', and accelerating on wet roads would be more secure (and towing, of course). If you avoid the 'fail' conditions, then it is fine.
