I think you'll find that the traditional classic policy providers have watered down their offerings to grab more market share. Certainly commuting, everyday use/unlimited mileage, etc. are not features of true classic insurance which is more about collectables. I suspect you're getting the equivalent of an everyday policy badged to look like classic cover.

Regardless of that, it is something on our wish list to be able to provide to members (of course we want to be able to cover as much as possible) and insurers are tightening up rather than relaxing at the moment so we have to pick the right time to make the request.

I see your point, but I honestly think it is more a case of times changing. 20 years ago, 20 year old cars were Sunday drivers for shows, or old knackers being ran into the ground.

In the last 5-10 years there has been a massive increase in the number of 20 year old cars being used as daily (only only) cars. Especially in the younger generations. I have never seen so many young drivers using "retro" cars as daily drivers and also taking them to shows/local meets - Volvos, Maestros, Ladas, VW Golf, Peugeot 205's, Rovers/MG's, etc.etc.

Companies like Footman James and Adrian Flux have recognised this, massively changed to match the market in the last 5-10 years - that's all.

We would insure those scenarios but under everyday policies, which I suspect is what the others are doing. I can't comment without knowing what sort of premiums you're paying. I don't reckon it's £85-£150, which you'd recognise as classic rates but I may be wrong.

I'm sure we'll get there.

I can assure you they are definitely classic policies.

FYI:

Beetle - £140/yr - £3500 agreed value

Mini - £150/yr (up from £110 before turbo) - £4500 agreed value

Volvo - £170/yr - £1500 agreed value

No classic insurer would touch me on my 240. I'm 20 in September, I drive it daily, and had a 240 since I was 17. I don't entirely like to criticise people who do their job but sometimes I've found with insurers you'll rinse young drivers dry and pull any figure you want out of a top hat... Nuff said.

I do find it ludicrous that the VOC pledge they can get you cheaper insurance by becoming a member - only if you're over 85 and require a Malaysian nurse to even go to the toilet that is.

it's the fact that you have to say your renewal price shouldnt they try and be the lowest possible without knowing that then ?

Hi,

The BBC News website reports:
"Drivers saw their car insurance premiums rise by an average of £110 in the last year, a comparison site says. More expensive repairs and recent government changes to injury payouts pushed up annual insurance costs by 16%, according to Confused.com. It found drivers paid on average £781 on comparison sites for a comprehensive policy in the year to March 2017. Average premiums are set to rise to a record high and could pass £1,000 next year, it added. Newer vehicles have seen some of the biggest rises, because their increasingly complex electronics have made repairs more expensive...

...The Confused [dot] com research...checks more than four million car insurance quotes."

I just wanted to let you know that the Chris Knott average premium through the club insurance scheme is much lower than that reported on the comparison sites.

In March 2016, Chris Knott's average premium was less than half that at £369. This March (2017) it was £399 - just a £30 increase and still majorly more economical than £781. There's definitely something beneficial for members in using the club scheme through Chris Knott then.

VOC QUOTELINE: 0800 023 4374 - please call us at renewal.

If that's before 1st June you'll also gain entry in the Chris Knott 'British F1 Grandstand Tickets' Prize Draw.

best,
Nick

"£367 cheaper than my renewal from flux, £65 cheaper with no limited mileage & all mods covered after shopping around. I am a happy bunny thanks." G30001, R32 Owners Club

"Had my quote matched today so new CK customer on Saturday as of renewal time. Covers all the mods that are planned from the stockpile of parts in the garage that have been collected over the last few months... Spoken to 3 different ladies (Tabitha, Kathy (of Legend) and Rebecca) and the level of customer service has been consistently brilliant with everything being understood first hand and not needing to explain what each mod is." benmellor, GT86/BRZ Drivers Club

"Thank you Daryl for matching a cheaper quote from another insurance company. Guess I will be staying with Chris Knott for another year. " Jon Dixon, Facebook

"I may need to hop back to chris knott insurance when my renewal comes through early next month, made the mistake of hopping over to a cheaper provider who has extortionate admin fees." sliced, Audi-Sport.net

"Recently taken a policy out with Chris Knott due to the very competitive quote. I needed to call them to change my reg number as I added my private plate to my car, I braced myself for the "well there's a charge for this and a charge for that" as experienced from other insurance companies, but no! Gave them the new number and that was that, no charge! Well done, credit where it's due!! stchris356, BimmerForums

Chris, you may want to check your rates - I got a quote from one of your team a week or two back, was told it was with Aviva. Just taken out a policy direct for half the price ..

Car insurance is such a lottery - by definition it is based on so many individual circumstances that I always doubt that there is much value in the sweeping generalisations about rates of increase and average premiums. So much depends on you, the car, and whether the attributes of you and your car happen to be in favour this month or not...

I have my 480 on classic car insurance through Chris Knott this year; a better package than the previous one I had through Adrian Flux (in particular the insurance company in question is UK based and well known, as against Gibraltar based and completely unknown to me) and significantly cheaper. And I was very impressed with the service!

Default Chris Knott Insurance could not help me i'm afraid

Unfortunately when i rang chris Knott Insurance recently to insure my V70-2005,D5 SE and as soon as i told them my postcode[an Oldham one that's Lanc's]I was told ''Sorry we don't cover that area, now I know that Oldham has it's bad reputation for fraudulent claims for whiplash and the like, but in my case I've never claimed in over 30 years of insuring cars,my cars, have always been parked on the drive, and I have never had any problems with vandalism, fire or theft in that time, but I didn't get chance to tell them that.I thought being a member of the Volvo Owners Club would at least give me a chance of some sort of quote, even if it was pricey, but no,so i have crossed Chris Knott off my insurers quote list and won't bother them again, and I will continue with the comparison sites, which i did get a decent quote of £425.00 fully comp with Hastings Direct. So Chris Knott missed out on my easy few hundred quid for the taking.
