Mini roundabouts every 3 miles? Sounds like Milton Keynes - sat-nav goes into an endless loop : "At the next roundabout, continue straight to stay on H8" While exiting the roundabout : "In 1/4 mile at the next roundabout, take the second exit to continue on H8" Each roundabout seems to be 1/4 mile from the next. I know of one car that definitely got hot on the Isle of Man - it was piloted by Tony Pond in 1990 at up to 150mph! Definitely got a bit warm!

Seem to remember that being a bog standard Rover 827,
Its not long been beat by a tricked up Subaru. Cant remember who drove it but i bet they wouldnt get close if someone handed them the 827 to do it in! |

It was indeed Ted - straight off the production line but missing central locking and electric windows. It gained some beefier anti roll bars and slightly stiffer springs (all of which became standard, dependent on model, fit on later 800s ) and a straight through exhaust but otherwise standard and is still in existence. Sadly has the 2.0 T series turbo in it now but has served duty at Thruxton and Snetterton as a pace car and also been raced privately at both too.
Now in the hands of a private owner who has raced it at Thruxton (bought it from them when they retired it as a pace car) and i think is trying to return it to the original spec. I have photos somewhere of it in his garage. The engine/box used by Tony Pond in that car for the record attempt was in his company 827 Vitesse the day before as well! I believe it was a guy called Mark Higgins (Higgs?) that drove the Subaru WRX Impreza that as you rightly say was fully tricked out - roll cage, no seats or anything, pretty much rally ready. They only just beat the 827 so i tend to agree - put them in an 827 against Tony Pond and they wouldn't do it. Also bear in mind there's about 25+ years time between the two!

No, the standard spec of the production WRX is 2.5L 305bhp, not 600+bhp as they have used for the record challenge. I could go on because i found other admissions through the videos from the American guy (from Subaru of America) of other modifications. Rover didn't double the power output of the engine or fit a trick gearbox, it was all standard except the bits i pointed out above. You're not comparing like with like - a fully prepared rally car against a production car straight off the line and you certainly can't say they had similar modifications.

Also had the engine in the wrong way and drive going to wrong wheels, whereas Subaru has a fantastic 4 wheel drive system and tons of grip. Still a very impressive feat considering it took that long to beat it. |

At the time, they were rated at 177bhp Ted and not a turbo anywhere to be seen.
