Average MPG of the Petrol engines
I'm trying to gain an understanding of how much the MPG varies between the whole range of petrol engines on the P2. Ultimately, trying to understand whether it's pointless owning the lower power engines if average MPG is very similar to the T5's etc.
What is your general average MPG shown on your trip computer if you own any of the following in standard form? 2.4 140 2.4 170 2.0 T 2.4 T 2.5 T 2.3 T5 2.4 T5 2.5 R Are the Low Pressure Turbo engines better or worse on fuel than the High Pressure T5s etc? My 2.0T sits at approx 25mpg average for me. |

I have a "2.4 170"
I tally my fuel mileage monthly. I never push the computer button except going downhill so I can see it say "99.99 mpg instantaneous". My mode average is 25.5 miles per US gallon. BEST SO FAR: 27.14 (>2,500 miles-much on highways) WORST SO FAR: 16.37 (630 miles in a month with 4 big snow storms where I did little but move the car out of plow trucks' paths). REMEMBER these are miles per US gallon. |

I don't think the T5 will come close to the 2.4i. Even so, the 2.4i 170 (all US non turbo have 170hp) is not economical in city driving with lots of traffic lights or stop signs. I do get 45 mpg (uk because the us mpg is a little lower) on motorway at around 110kmh (a/c off) but the engine is in good condition, the intake air thermostat removed, correct spark plugs, 15' tires, etc. All this from the computer measurement, I haven't myself calculated at the pump.
Inside the city the story is at the opposite extreme. Never better than 22mpg with the automatic transmission and plenty of traffic lights in my area. 'City' driving can be totally different from country to country. Plus, city management where I live have hardly heard about traffic light synchronization.

I was getting 99.99 in traffic sometimes (don't remember well, perhaps when the car wasn't moving), it was the front oxygen sensor. With a new one (I put a NTK/NGK) the numbers are now back to normal.

Hi, 'T5R92011'. I have an automatic 2.4 140, albeit in a late (Feb 2000) P1 V70, which has done just over 120K miles.
My trip computer currently shows 29.4 MPG. My running average over 6132 miles is 28.9147 as shown on my spreadsheet. As there are presently six or seven gallons remaining in the tank, and it was all but empty when I bought it, I have no reason to doubt the (relative) accuracy of the trip computer. To me, as I now do a very low annual mileage, fuel consumption is not a major consideration when purchasing a car. Perhaps one reason for owning a lower powered version might be the reduced insurance costs. Another may be less expense on tyres - I understand that the more powerful versions are much heavier on the front ones. Regards, John.

A friend has the 2.5R - and gets around 21 most of the time... with regular 'spirited' driving.

A quick cut and paste from a spreadsheet indicates changing from 25mpg to 35mpg currently makes a difference in cost of around £750 per year assuming 12k miles travelled.
