IMHO the best 'budget' tyres are Runway Enduros, I have used these for many years without any problems whatsoever.
I now fit these in preference to any others, a good all round tyre.

Hi, I've been through a few tyre types on the V70 over the 4 years that I've had the car. Have always run 225/45/17 XL in W - Y rating. I'm generally very light on tyres & brakes averaging around 20 - 25K front on the Volvo (25 - 30 on a Honda VTi front) and around 100K on front pads / disks on the Volvo (one set of pads, no disks on the VTi in 135K)

Accelera Alpha came on the rear of the car when I bought it and seem to have good wear and ok in wet & dry (lost one to a non-repairable puncture). Think it was part worn Goodyear NCT on the front which were OK but rubbed.

Had Continental Sport contact 2 & 3 (Front & rear) - very good for conrtol of tramlining, didn't rub (IIRC) good in wet & dry but poor in the snow. Around £110 - 120 from Black Circles. Wear was fair, around 18 - 20K. Quiet tyre.

Tried budget Milleniums (around £80 - £90) from National on the front and were good on wear, wet and dry but rubbed. Good when new but as they got to around 3 - 4mm tramlining became evident and became twitchy in the wet. Got around 20 - 25K on the front. Better than the Conti in the snow.

Currently (after much research) I'm running Khumo Ecsta le sport (KU39 I think) all round (around £84 each from a local independant tyre shop) and had 4 wheel alignment checked / adjusted at the same time (fractionally out). Done around 17K on these and still around 4 - 5 mm, Treadwear index 280). Very good in wet & dry, good on tramlining. same indi also recommended Falken tyres.

Hope this helps.

A vote for Vredestein Sportrac 3 - fronts still have good tread after 12k and they are excellent in wet and snow. Put the 97 XL on so they are probably a bit tougher than others. Only downside is road noise is probably a bit above average but that's what you get for the v-shaped grooves (like the Goodyear Eagle F1) and good bad-weather handling.

When they wear out will probably also consider Uniroyal Rainsport as per previous poster as local tyre place has them. These also have had a good rating from Which? along with the Vreds.

Another vote for the Vred Sportrac 3, I had them on 3 cars including my current Volvo and they're not far off the performance of more expensive tyres for a fraction of the price. Now on Kumho Ecsta sport KU31, which although are ok aren't a patch on the Vredesteins in the wet.

£114 is a very low budget for a pair of tyres, especially 17" tyres! Have you looked at getting a set of 2nd hand 16" wheels and selling yours, tyres are much cheaper and the ride is better.

Default Minimise tyre wear

Just fitted 4 new tyres to my 2010 V70, any suggestions as to how to optimise tyre wear as previous set tended to wear unevenly?

Get a four wheel alignment done and keep the pressures somewhere just shy of the full load pressures.
I don't rotate midlife anymore. when the fronts are worn the new tyres go on the back and the old rears come up front. It's a marginal call but many would say that it's best to have the better treads on the back end so it breaks last if and when you do push it too hard in the wet.

Does anyone use Michelin CrossClimate? They’ve been good on my wife’s Astra and I may well fit them to the XC70 when the current Pirelli scorpions finally wear out.

It’s been pleasing that we fitted the tyres and then it snowed again although the tyres are probably worth more than her car...
