Default V40 Key and fob

Hi everyone, this is my first post after recently picking a V40 T4 of which I'm very happy with.
However, unfortunately it only came with one key and one fob of which is a little worse for wear. I was also given a spare fob but not sure if its compatible with the car (no batteries to try it either).
Obviously I'm looking to get another key cut and a new remote fob.
Is this a dealer only part, in particular will I need to go to a dealer for programming or can I go somewhere else to keep cost down. I've seen fobs and blank keys on e-bay but does this aid the issue?
I live on the Isle of Wight and we have no dealer here and think my nearest dealer is Kings in Southampton, which means £40-50 to leave the island!
Any help, suggestions etc appreciated.
Paul

Hi there,

What year is the car?

This will alter things a little.

Many Thanks,

Daniel.

Hey up,

I'm deep into this at the moment. Can you post a picture of the fobs or a link to someone elses photo of them?

Older cars have a security mode to learn new fobs. Newer cars, you can buy a 2nd hand receiver with two fobs. Like me. Or, it's to the dealer.

Keys wise, you can get a cheap key cut without the immobiliser chip. This will open the boot and the drivers door but not start the car.

Short of replacing the immobiliser and locks, like me, you'll be at a main dealer for a key.

They quoted me £250 for key and fob.

Many Thanks,

Daniel

Ah,

Welcome to my nightmare. A phase 1.5 fob.

I am about to fit a new receiver to my car with two fobs. If successful I will have a receiver with a working fob for sale. I don't know if that's of interest.

Keys wise, I'd suggest again the idea of getting a cheap one cut with no immobiliser chip. So you can at least get in the car if the keys are lost.

I have actually got another full lock set with 2 fobs offered from a guy at £60 posted.

I can put you in touch if you like. It'll have everything in it you need to replace the system and have two keys and fobs.

Many Thanks,

Daniel.

When I bought the car I was given a spare fob, though I've not checked to see if it is the one compatible with my car. I'll check it first to eliminate it. I've got a spare battery too to try it. That will then in theory only leave me with a key issue.
I'll check the obvious after work today and see where I stand.
Many thanks for your help by the way.

No problem!

I've found a few local auto locksmiths that seem to be able to create the key at a much reduced price to Volvo. That may be the best way to go.

Many Thanks,

Daniel.
