Default Harmonic balance – do they ever need changing?

Just changed the timing belt, idler and tensioner wheels on my 1994 850SE (petrol, manual). The visible rubber on my harmonic balance (the auxiliary belt pulley on the crank), was visibly perished. Anyone know if that matters?

Clan, if you are reading this, I did not need to take the crank pulley off this time as there seemed to be more clearance on the 1994 850 than the 2002 V70. Also, I like the hydraulic tensioner set up much more than the dodgy spring affair on the more modern car.

I've nearly 300k on my engine, so did mine. It was the original a few years back with over 20 years on it since in had it new. So yes I would and do the Cambelt and maybe water pump and the front engine mount while you're at it for belt and braces.
