T5 Exhaust on to 1.8 system.
Folks, is it possible to fit a twin exit T5 exhaust on to my 1.8 V50?
I read somewhere that you need to cut/weld the exhaust to fit over the axle? What about connecting up to the existing CAT as I don't see much point de-cat'ing. Just thoughts really and I know I would need a new bumper splitter. Any suggestions?

If you like the idea of losing power for optics, do so. The 1.8l needs backpressure whereas the T5 not so much. Mix both systems on a 1.8l and you'll end up around 90 hp!

Agreed, the increased diameter of the T5 system will ruin the torque characteristics of the 1.8.

Im glad I asked the question :-)
thank you both, I hadn't considered the consequences. Just enforces a reason to go buy a T5 ;-)

I've now got my wonderful Volvo and I have no problems as I already have a T5 but I am interested to know (just because I like knowing things) why a big bore exhaust would reduce the power of the 1.8 in question? What are the dynamics and why the need for back pressure?? Think allot of people must fall into this trap (boy racer types) and actually reducing the power of their cars instead of increasing. SUDDEN thought! Would putting the bigger exhaust on reduce your insurance if it has reduced the power?? It was rhetorical really as I think I already know the answer to that one. |

Well, the thing is, a non turbo petrol (!) always will need a back pressure in order to achieve good torque figures as well as a good fuel economy. If you raise the diameter say from the cat onwards, the back pressure will drop - at the same time dropping fuel economy and performance.
If you say did it behind the first silencer, then it isn't that bad. The first one is for back pressure, the second one for noise... I doubt the insurance companies would drop your insurance costs, as you have still modded your car - at least in England. In Germany the insurance isn't attached to the engine size or power... More so to the area you live in and how frequent your car with engine is crashed
