Default slight turbo whistle after remap and other questions

Hi brethren,

Since I had a remap on Friday I have noticed a slight whistle from the turbo (at first I thought it was a distant police siren!). It starts around 1400 rpm. Previously, I have not had this sound I'm sure.

I am assuming that the turbo is kicking in earlier now? However, I am worried about overtaxing the turbo and having it fail much earlier. We checked for leaks and there were none detected, turbo was boosting fine too when checked. Is this sound normal and nothing to worry about, any precautions with turbos after remaps?

Also, after a remap, does top speed change much? I had a run up to 140 mph, I thought the car was limited to 130 mph. What have been people's experiences. I assumed its mainly power & torque in the mid ranges rather than top speed change.

What car do you have?

With regard to top speed, if you have extra bhp then at the top end your car has more power to push against the elements thus reaching a higher top speed.

Sorry forgot to state I have an S40 2.0D, late 2005.

In regards to bhp, manual states 136 bhp, dyno read 140 bhp, after remap 168 bhp. I just assumed that speed is limited to 130 regardless of bhp gains?

The increased turbo whistle is normal for the 2.0d, I believe the turbo spins faster with a remap.

If the before dyno read 140bhp, I'd say your engine was working perfectly.

Whats the increase in performance like? I would imagine it goes like poo off a scoop. I always did want to remap my 2.0d but ended up buying a T5.

you are right unless they have specificaly altered the speed limiter in the ECU in which case they should be able to tell you .

Ah i didn't know this!

I noticed the preface lift 2.0d is rated at 136bhp/130mph and post face lift as 134bhp/127mph.

Is the S40 T5 electronically limited to 149?

The same engine with exactly the same bhp in the Mondeo 2.5 goes to 152mph and is lot heavier!

The increase in performance is very noticeable, the wife said she won't be borrowing it too often after taking it for a spin last night. It's not crazy wild power, but power band has expanded and it feels like there is more to come whereas previously you hit a flat spot. Also when in between gear changes, when you engage clutch there is a lot less loss of power, this is v good

Discussed remap with garage, apparently the turbo is indeed kicking in earlier and working a bit harder but hopefully this should not compromise longevity - I intend to stick to my usual driving style; 1800-2400 rpm for gear changes.

I have also confirmed, speed limiter has indeed been lifted following remap. In your case, it sounds like the T5 is more than likely capable of exceeding the stock speed limited 149 mph.

Remember the later T5 S40/V50/C30 is 230 bhp .
Both old and new version are limited to 155 mph .

Ah interesting.

I wouldnt have thought 220bhp was enough to take the S40 to 155mph. Could be wrong though!
