Default reduced engine performance

got this message earlier in the week. S40 55 plate 1.6 petrol went into limp mode. throttle power was reduced but managed to get home. Took it to an approved volvo dealer who ran some tests and felt there was a problem with the throttle but he didn't have the computer to be able to reset it. Took it into a volvo dealer in Warrington who have had the car since wednesday. They've been in touch and say it could be the ECM (Engine Control module/unit ?) or the BCM ( brake control module/unit) . These appear to be over a grand to buy ? has anyone else had a similar problem. Have spoken to the first garage and he was surprised the other garage is saying ECM/BCM as his computer was showing a throttle problem.

The car drove fine when i took it down to the second garage but warning message still on the dashboard. still not worth the risk of NOT having it done - just a lot of dough to pay out.

I would definitely risk NOT having it done until someone can tell me what the problem really is. If you pay for a diagnosis and they get it wrong then you should be able to gain their work for free and only pay for whatever they changed that actually fixed the problem - great in an ideal world.......

'Reduced engine performance' in my eyes points to something with the emission controls - fuelling, mixture, oxygen, airflow etc etc.

Nine times out of Ten these faults are caused by something trivial, they are tricky to find but changing an Electronic Control Unit is overkill and mostly unnecessary imo.

update - Warrington dealer been on the phone - no warning messages coming up - car road tested and driving fine. just have to keep a watch on the performance and if the problem crops up again i have to take it back in for them to run diagnostics again. fingers crossed its sorted now.
