Rustproofing
Has anyone had their car professionally rustproofed?
I've found a local place that does it, including removing the arch liners, steam cleaning the underside, then injecting into chassis rails, doors, etc and then applying underseal - but they charge £900 for a Volvo estate size car ...! I can only work on the driveway and have limited time, so doing it myself isn't practical, as much as I'd like to, so has anyone used a professional outfit to do this kind of work? If so, were they any good, and how much did they charge if you don't mind me asking? Thanks

I would never trust a professional outfit to do a thorough job no matter how cheap or expensive they were. Time is money and time spent is the most important aspect in doing this job properly.

I have seen rusty from wings and rear arches on some 850's and also on the underside rearward of the rear wheels . I suspect the front wings may be non volvo ones which have been used in Accident repairs and not prepared properly before painting and fitting. You need to thoroughly examine the car first and see what you have , it may well have no rust al all. the front wings are fairly easy to remove and check what is behind . And you can apply Dinitrol rust wax properly to the back of the wing and all the chassis bits before fitting them back Check the sills behind the plastic covers , if there is a serious problem there that will cost your £900 to replace . Your £900 would be well spent there rather than giving it to someone who doesn't care , they will spray wax around in random areas which are not rusty and spray over existing rust and it will make no difference at all to the life span of the car. I cant see why the size of the car would make much difference to the price . It is a good time to consider what you are doing whilst you can still get genuine parts . Unlike the 340 where the parts have dried up now.

I've removed the wheel arch liners from a '88 240 & '97 V70 they are easily removed and quickly- both cars had been spot on (slight rusting on the rear sill 240) This also includes the cover sills on the V70 (see write up etc)
The main point here is that you could easily do the above in stages appreciating the time scale you have- anything a little major can be put on the back burner until time allows, a lot of the car can be done like this with the added bonus that it will be done properly (I generally use clean oil diluted wax treatments sprayed on & into box sections) The quoted cost is high to me coupled with uncertainties regarding the work. If my cars ever have a fire they will go up better than anything Guy Fawkes could have produced! Regards Bob. |

Rustproofing companies in my view treat this as another tick box exercise. They'll spray everything in whatever the latest catch-all substance is, whether there's rust or not. Job done. Thumbs up. Looks good. Box ticked.
I'll bet in a year's time much of that will be turning orange and will be harder to find and sort because it has been hidden under gloop. If the car is a keeper I'd recommend doing it yourself. Do it in small sections if you don't have the time, and spend some of that budget on kit that will make the job easier. Surface rust ideally needs to be wire wheeled and then treated with something like hydrate 80 or vactan, then coated with something durable like epoxy or enamel, then finally undersealed or oiled. If there are any rust repairs / welds needing done at least they will be known about and obvious and you can limit the expenditure to getting those done properly rather than just hidden. |

What method do the D.I.Y brigade use to get their cars up as high as possible in order to do this job?
I ask this as I have been messing with my exhaust today and it is a right struggle getting under there. Used various jacks at varying points, but it would be nice to get some good clearance for future rust proofing. |

I am taking my C70 to Wayne near Sheffield next month. Check out the pictures of his work on an 850R. https://m.facebook.com/ArmourRustproofing/

Thanks everyone. Yes ideally I'd do it myself and use epoxy paint inside the arches etc
Clan, I appreciate what you say, but this is a Japanese 850 and has bugger all rust on it, so what little flash rust covering there may be will be controlled by a good coating of Dinitrol or whatever - remove the oxygen and it won't get any worse. The treatment is to protect the car from the road salt that our lovely councils chuck over the roads every winter. The importer has already applied a coating of waxoyl - but it looks like a thin and indiscriminate dusting to me I had considered using RustBusters and another company called FlatDog, but both no longer do the rustproofing service. NickP, let me know how you get on at Sheffield please - thats pretty local to me. Thanks again everyone.
