It's mounted in the bottom right of the thermostat housing. I replaced mine a couple of years back - it's not too bad a job.

Pic nicked from another website

The coolant temp sensor is the brass headed sensor, just below the thermostat.

Careful, dependent on year, and exact code, can be coming from MAF. Not sure about 1998. If a late 1998, and a Denso car, look there too. 1999 Denso cars have a temp code that is the MAF, and it comes up in vague terms such that you won't know if it means water or air temp.

Indeed. Replacing the temp sensor on mine helped cure at least 3 codes as I recall - P0131, 172 and another that eludes me. Replacing both 02 sensors and the MAF cured them both, but they came back. Replacing temp sensor and stat got rid of them. I got the info off another forum and went for it.

Good point, the pic above is a pre-ME7 engine - the one with the cable operated throttle body. If yours doesn't have the cable then its an ME7 engine which may well be different (I have no experience of that engine sorry)

Can confirm they are in the same location (both M4.4 and ME7) but they are different sensors with totally different loom connectors.

It is possible to change it without removing anything else if you have patience and a slim spanner. You'll only lose a tiny amount of coolant if you are quick with swapping it. Make sure the new sensor comes with a new gasket or alternatively make sure you don't lose the old one.
