How to tell if it's a GDI

I'm thinking about getting my wife a V40 1.8 petrol - how can I ensure I'm not looking at a GDI engined car?

What are the differences?

GDi's are marked 1.8i on the back, non Gdi only 1.8.
Also engine cover has GDi in large letters.
GDi engine size also 1834cc as opposed to 17something cc

It'll say GDI on the engine cover.
Anyway, aren't all V/S40's gdi after 2000/W?

GDi came in in 1998 (S Plate) and finished 2003/4.

The engine codes for the GDI are as follows:B4184SJ (121 hp) 2000-04
B4184SM (125hp) 1998-01.

Why would one avoid GDI engines?
