Default Replacing foam in the heater matrix

Yes indeed much as the name suggests, I've got to the point of refitting a new Matrix in my Wentworth and before replacing all the parts hopefully in the right order l need to replace the foam that appears to have disintingrated on the face of the closing/opening baffles.

So what did you gents do, does spray glue work with heat on the baffles, is foam of any quality used, is it even that neccessary?

Answers to a normally common sense question please.........living in an area with no shops that sell anything means ebay etc and l need to get this old girl on the road pretty smartish.

Thanks all.

Andy

I'd definitely replace the foam rather than ignore it. If the ducting isn't airtight you'll lose some of the 'force' of the air output provided by the fan, and you may well get annoying hissing and rattling noises.

I've never done a heater matrix in a 900 series fortunately (I've heard they are a bit of a PITA lol) but I have done a few in 850s. Obviously the arrangement is different, but I suspect you'd be able to use some domestic draught excluder foam strip if you can't get the automotive equivalent? The foam isn't in a high heat area, and isn't a fire risk so I would have thought it'd be ok to use... just a thought anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks Rolling Thunder,
l eventually found a section on the Volvo 940 "how to" site explaining the reasons for the foam and replacing with self adhesive foam to reduce noise and sealing the closing baffles mainly.
I used spray carpet glue and fabric backed foam....................but l will be have it all out again in the summer as the new heater core does not fit in place with the original straps so l've had to use copper wire on he 4 fixing screws and do a bodge job.
Anyone tackling this project would be advised to have the heater recored as the ends of the core will then be original and the straps will fit.
