Default S60 (2012) remote central locking receiver in ceiling

Hi Folks ,

First post (but long time creeping in the shadows here - btw - Thanks for all the sound advice & tips I have read here over the years).

I have an inquiry that someone here maybe able to help with ?

So, basically I have a S60 2012 (R-design) , and a few months back the distance needed to open the doors with the key fob went from about 30 feet to zero feet (I literally have to hold the key to the door lock - I confirmed with another key fob that it was not the fob or batteries).

I had the car at the Dealer a few days back for a separate issue and I asked them to check this out. After doing some unknown diagnostics they said "it is most likely the receiver which is built into the ceiling" and said its a fairly big job to replace .... They said they would have to drop the whole roof / ceiling / headliner to replace the receiver ... They said it would cost in the region of €1200 (which includes €125 for the receiver) - as they said its a days work ....

My question is this :- Is it possible to replace the receiver in the headliner maybe by doing some nifty surgical type operation on the headliner ? (without having to rip the whole thing down) - because the part is on ebay for about €20 - Part Number: 31268992) - I wouldnt mind some minor headliner imperfections afterwards .... Also if I do replace it , does it automatically work with my car and key fobs or is there some programming / pairing needed ?

Additionally the 3rd brake light (high mount on back window) has also died (was flickering for a few months and has now passed on) - the Dealer also told me to replace this bulb it also has to be done when the headliner comes down .... Is that true ? - to replace a bulb the roof has to come down - that cant be true because if it is , then thats a seriously bad design. ...

Sorry for the long windedness ... Thanks Folks

Hi Again Folks ...

I have had no joy with any replies here ...

Assuming its the receiver in the ceiling thats the more complicated part of the question , can anyone answer the part about the high 3rd brake light please ?

Also , does anyone know of any other Forum that I could ask about the receiver ?

Thanks

I thought the third brake light was LED and will last for years +.There must be a loose connection for it to flicker,it cannot be because it is failing.

Yeah , it is LED and did flicker initially and then died .... so is it possible to get at that 3rd brake light in a convenient manner ?

I don't know about these cars but in the earlier models it was a closed unit, not able to open.

Actually , I have been reading around and saw many references to blocked drains in the sunroof ..... I wonder could that explain my problem - a blocked drain or leak in the sunroof causing water ingress in the headliner and causing my problems with the receiver and light (it a bit suspect as I would think they are fairly close) - then again - I dont see any damp stains on the headliner
