I cheated. I removed the retaining springs from the old struts while holding the tailgate up by hand using my free hand. Then i popped the strut off the ball connectors on one side and let the dead strut drop on the floor, fitting the new one with my free hand. Repeated procedure for the other side then recovered the dead struts from the floor.

Job done!

Where did you get the broom calibrated, as I think mine is way out of spec now?

I think Volvo have updated the spec for the broom handle to 21mm it prevent possible bending under load.

I personally prefer the 19 mm ones as they offer less wind resistance and of course the ones used by Trigger.

I used a piece of wood the previous owners of my house left when they moved out thirty years ago. I always knew it would come in handy one day.

Hi Luke, you do need stronger ones if your fitting a boot spoiler, I got mine from CARPARTSINMOTION back in march 2017 £22.65 for the pair, still working just fine. David

Default 3rd-party solution.

Try a 6' tall bloke - that way you can open the unsuppported tailgate as far as you need to and, when the bloke's arms tire HE gets hit by the falling tailgate
