Default 960 roof rails

Evening all

I'm thinking of buying a 960 without roof rails. Is it possible to have these retrofitted?

Hopefully this doesn't sound like a stupid question but ant info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Look at Pg23 of this pdf :

https://accessories.volvocars.com/Le...R_GB_NL_DE.pdf

The answer is yes, the part numbers are there as well but apparantley a special tool is needed.

I'm wondering if these can be fitted to a 940? And what might the special tool do? I have various stuff from my previously owned Celebration, including roof bars.

If you look at Pg23 of the catalogue i linked to John, it says V90, 965, 945, 765, 745 so yes, they can.

As for Special Tool 1159-661-6, looking up Volvo Special Tools, it goes from 1159294 to 1159663 :

http://www.volvotools.com/tools/search

Nothing for 1159-881-6 but i would make a guess it's a 6mm Allen Key.

What would be the procedure for fitting them? The roof have to have holes cut in it?

I've never fitted them but would imagine the first thing to remove would be the headlining. Not as daunting as it sounds, remove the interior light, unplug it and then pop the trim strips outs of the grab handles (panic straps) and remove the screws (#2 Pozi NOT Phillips, the Phillips will slip!) and remove them.
Next, using an 8mm socket (from memory, may be 10mm) remove the sunvisors and their landing clips, pop the cover of the rear view mirror base with a flat bladed screwdriver and use the socket to remove the mirror too. If you have a sunroof, you'll have to remove either the motor cover or winder base and the seal round the headlining to sunroof aperture, remove the 90deg twist to release buttons on the actual headlining, ease the cant-rail trim down at the top of the windows/doors to release the outer edges of the headlining, finally remove the rear trim (again 90deg turn to release) buttons where the headlining meets the tailgate area and gently drop the headlining down and backwards, removing completely through the tailgate hole.

After that it's pure guess-work but i suppose you'd have to drill mounting holes for the roof rails. No doubt the originals from Volvo come with instructions and templates for this, if you buy secondhand perhaps the seller can make templates for each corner with a piece of paper and rub a pencil round where the holes were - assuming they still have the donor shell of course!

Be careful with the headlining "biscuit", it's just as fragile as its nickname suggests!
