THUD / CLUNK switching gear
Hello everyone,
I have a 2012 S60 ( mileage 156k) and I have this type of thud/clunk (heard and felt) that the car makes as I switch from P to D. I rarely it experience it in the morning as I first use the car, yet I may experience it later on the same day. And I sometimes do not experience that often. Any ideas as why ? Thank you Last edited by Volvo s60 2012; Nov 18th, 2019 at 01:03. |

If you look through the many (so many!) posts in the S60 section lower down, you will find an array of answers to this.. They range from 'live with it' to 'the gearbox is going to die'! My own would crash into gear 'occasionally' I was told Volvo 'don't repair' gearboxes, only replace! A transmission specialist didn't find a fault (despite driving the car for 45 minutes!!!) Eventually I had Volvo change the oil and that seemed to do the trick
.for me.
Have a read and decide the best approach for you and good luck! Nice car, by the way! |

do you get a similar noise when selecting reverse? but yet again, its a case of how loud/severe a thud/clunk is it.....all drive trains have some movement, which gives this "thud" effect, its just if it gets too bad it may need checking, but by all means ask a local gearbox specialist to roadtest it and go by their opinion.

That you sense it later in the day makes me guess fluid refreshment will help a bunch. 156,000 miles is way long enough on the factory fill.
I'm a fan of adding LubeGard (red bottle) at the proscribed 1 oz. / system qt. dosage. I realize the mere mentioning of any "snake oil" can be off-putting but this stuff works from experience. I thought to add that a bad motor mount can result in a clunk but you'd have the clunk all the time. |
