XC90 T5 v B5
First post so apologies if there is another thread on this subject. The lease on my XC90 D5 has just ended so looking for a replacement. Absolutely loved the XC90 so ideally want another one. I’m considering an XC90 T5 due to the cheaper leasing deals but nervous about real world MPG.
I averaged 32.4 mpg during my 2 yr lease based on 18,600 miles ( according to the Volvo on call app). My mileage will rise to 12k per annum for the next two years. Can XC90 T5 owners share their real world MPG plus any other benefits of petrol over diesel? |

I have an XC60 T5 so lighter than the XC90. The best I've seen on a motorway journey is 40 mpg but generally I get between 36 - 38 mpg if you stick to speed limits if you have a heavy right foot it'll only go one way. I can't see you getting more than 35mpg from the XC90 at best.
About town 24 - 28, I can get 30 on a commute if traffic is light but 20 - 21 will certainly be the norm in stop start traffic. My overall average is 28. It's a nice little motor just a tad on the fuel heavy side but if you don't care about the odd additional trip to the filling station over a the year it's no biggy. Volvo Diesel owners appear to be suffering dpf blow back issues (driving style dependant) and I think they are less common on a petrol. I've never had a dpf regen issue with any Diesel I've had so must be in some part related to the current Volvo diesel lumps. It's probably true that Diesel still suits larger SUV type cars and I think if you're commuting the B5 might work out well. You can get up to speed reasonably well in all of them, they're not track weapons and when you're doing 30 what does it matter if you have 1000hp or 100?!

See my response #22 on this page. IMHO the T5 isn't suited to the large XC90, it has to work hard and returns (in my experience) terrible fuel economy.

Well I have a D4 and I don't do this mileage. I get 33 mpg, real world mileage.
Even the fuel economy association of the US reports that an XC60 T5 has an average of 22 or 23 mpg. https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymo...lvo_XC60.shtml

Don’t forget American gallons are less that ours, I.e about 4 litres compared to 4.5 litres

I’ve an XC60 T5 and previously had an XC90 D5
My average in the 1st 5000 miles of the T5 is 29.5mpg. 40% in town and 60% long runs. In comparison my XC90 D5 over 20000 miles average 33.8mpg; similar usage. T5 is significantly nicer to drive... mostly as it’s smooth and quiet. The local dealer master technician tells me that T5 cars with 20-30k miles are getting diesel figures but they take a while to bed in. Only time will tell. If I did 12k a year and mostly out of town I’d still buy the B5 (D). My 9k and balance of use... T5 every time. |

My experience diesel vs petrol..
My D4 which is continually driven in anger and will not drop below 39mpg. Had a (nearly new) T5 for a day - same journey and pace and it recorded 23mpg.. They were both V90’s. It’s all to do with how hard you drive them. A hard driven diesel retains a degree of economy, the petrol. - not so much.

I’ve tried both T5 and D5 in brand new XC60s and XC90s. In both cars I’d still choose T5 as they are so much more refined. The fuel economy is worse but you don’t buy a 40 or 50 grand car to save money! My mileage is 6-8k per year so the difference is not much anyway.
