The manifold is only ever likely to get really hot after shutting down after a heavy load, where the colder parts like the inlet manifold then become a heat sink. It’s not likely to happen while the engine is running.

The reason they don’t repair it straight away is probably because they do not have the required number of parts, and may not have even designed the required modifications yet. It is likely to take a considerable amount of workshop time to complete the mod when they have a solution. Could be a year or more before all eligible engines are done.

In the meantime just drive on and don’t worry about it but use normal best practice when shutting down a hard worked and hot engine.
I didn't realise it was DPF regenarating back then so I switched the ignition on and off again which stopped the loud fans. Next time I'll just let it do it's job.

I don't let my engine idle before turning off though, will that cause issues? I don't tow but do sometimes drive spiritedly.

Regarding stop/start I left it on but to be honest it only ever kicks in when needed i.e when stopped in traffic. Is using stop/start bad?

Thanks. I'm guess I got a bit worried when risk of fire was mentioned.
Hopefully it will be rectified in due course.

FORD actually , they must have retained some Ford guys to fit a plastic inlet manifold which looks just like the ones Ford have used for years . They have been ok on the D5 since 2006 of course which also have a plastic inlet manifold but volvo style , Paint it and you would think it was an alloy one .

It actually is bad, yes. However there are systems fitted that at least partially protect the turbo and mitigate heat stress at the top of the engine on engines with S/S fitted. Personally I still strongly believe in idling the engine for between a few seconds and a minute or two after working it hard or long, in order to let the turbo slow down to its idle and to dissipate the extreme heat from this areas. There are tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of turbocharged engines on the road with stop/start where the driver's don't give two hoots about this, and the land isn't sinking under the weight of turbos with gunged bearings, faulty seals or melted cylinder heads, so it is not a massive issue as it once was, but nevertheless I don't want a prematurely failed turbo or other heat stress related issues weighing on my wallet thanks.

Maybe I'm old fashioned? I prefer to think of myself as having mechanical sympathy. I work vehicles hard after they have warmed up and cool them down before shutting off. I'm not obsessed by it and it just comes naturally after a while.

Even turbochargers have plastic bits and even printed circuit boards built-in these days and have done for at least a decade. Garret AiResearch, now Honeywell, have had computerised industrial and car engine tubos for many years and, believe me, those things get HOT!

Here is a control stepper motor and electronics which is directly attached to a turbocharger
