Thanks for the replies - I spoke with the alloy company and they agree that the damage is marginal and to check with Volvo if they would charge and how much. I spoke with Volvo and they have sent me the BRVLA guide they use but would not provide any costs on repairs - not even a single example! They did concede it is usually always cheaper to repair them yourself rather than incur a charge!!

The damage to the alloy on one wheel is 40mm which is less than the 50mm in the guide so that is ok, but the other is 55mm so over the limit so will go ahead and get it refurb for £86.

Update here: I decided to try derby alloys on the recommendation of a colleague so for £20 rather than the £86 I think they have done a fantastic job.

Just had the inspection, unbelievably detailed he was here for 30 mins taking photos checking paint depth, alloy coatings, tread depth, panel thickness etc etc. I’m thinking oh god this is going to cost a fortune! But on the positive side no chargeable damage slight paint chip on bumper and small scuff on the alloy, but all within fair wear and tare! Well chuffed!!

FYI a repaired alloy scuff is £150 from Volvo, he let that slip!

That sounds like a great result.

I did try to politely tell folks that nowadays its a recognised racket trying to get extra money when inspecting returning leased vehicles, especially private users. I am told that the average bill from Mercedes inspection returns is over £500 per vehicle ( I got stung £250 for a missing 2nd service receipt even though the electronic data held at Mercedes confirmed it had been serviced!!)

I had hoped that Volvo would be more lenient but that looks like wishful thinking. The best option will always be to get any work done yourself before inspection.

Cheers
