I work using axle stands all the time so I don't think a lift makes too much difference.
Are you using a long offset ring spanner like he is or a flat open ended spanner with perhaps less length and leverage and a poorer fit?

You can get no purchase on the ring spanner when it's on the bolt with a breaker bar attached .. The rear of the car/the ground, is in the way ...there's a good chance this bolts been there for over 14 years, hence my plea for help ! ;-)

No purchase means that it's not gripping correctly in which case you use a better spanner.
If the spanner is gripping properly but you just can't move it, that's a clearance/leverage issue.

Could you securely build up the height of the car using wood under the axle stands or on the saddle of the jack?

By "purchase" I don't mean the spanner is slipping .. It is impossible to get an angle of leverage with the breaker bar ... I appreciate your help but this one is a real pig .. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same problem and how they resolved it !

It's not impossible but it sounds impossible using the tools that you are using.
More height on the car will give more clearance for your breaker bar or a shorter breaker bar is the solution.
You're trying to make the job fit your tools which from personal experience doesn't always end well.

You could also drill out the bolt from the outside of the car - you need to chop a chunk out of the hub for access with an angle grinder.

Well good luck and I hope you get it sorted.
You had all the right tools assuming the job went well but the job has changed slightly as can happen unfortunately.

If your car is as the pictures in this thread you have unrestricted access to the ends of them. Good quality drill bit and drill down the center of the bolt till passed the threaded housing, start small and work up, the heat generated plus the reduction of preasure may be enough to free it off with your ring spanner. Also try preloaded the spanner thenot hit the spanner with a hammer, preferably soft faced.

Have a similar situation with landrover swivel mounting bolts, 14mm bi hex bolt head behind the swivel ball preventing end on access, the hammer on ring spanner has yet to fail and landrover bolts are renowned for being made of soft cheese.
