Default 1999 S70 T5 ETS warning help !!!!!!

Hi all

ok here's the story

i pulled away from a junction rather quicky tonight and the car cut out for 10 secc the ETS light has come on so i pulled into a layby, i turned the engine off and back on then the engine management light has come on with the ETS light, The car seems to run fine now but the radiator fan wont switch off and the 2 lights are still on.

I disconnected the battery for half hr and the lights reset but within 5 seconds the lights are back on and the fan is on permanently so i left the battery live off tonight.

Does anyone know what ETS means as i dont have a manual or does anyone know what my problem might/could be??

thanks (bigbird) 1999 S70 T5 manual

ETS = Electronic Throttle System

I believe there was a recall for replacement/software upgrade for this. Reading the codes I'm afraid is dealer only via VADIS.

Can anybody clarify the details on the recall mentioned above? I have an S70 T5 1999 spec 102,000 miles and starting to have problems with ETS (Currently just setting off Engine Management System warning light. Seems to happen once in a while when I 'floor it'.)

Local independent is suggesting a replacement ETS body but at £500 + want to avoid this if possible. Can anybody suggest how effective cleaning the throttle body is.

Is it possible to source scrap ETS bodies and if so is this a cost efective way of replacing the old one?

Quite a few questions there..any info very gratefully received!

Thanks
Tony :(

Tony,

According to the Volvo specialist I use (over a decade Volvo experience) he has only needed to change 3 out of the dozens and dozens of Volvos he has worked on. He always takes them off and cleans them with an almost 100% success rate. Don't ask me how he does it 'cos thats what I pay big bucks for :-)

Apparently as they are under the inlet manifold and a total pig to get off it is standard practice to change them for no other reason than to avoid the customer coming back with the same fault a few days later. Garages will not take a chance, no matter how small, on having to do a job twice with the second time at their expense and Joe Public pays to protect their butt.

It happens all the time and the policy is the old "if in doubt, change it out". If you are going to do the job yourself then I would find out how to clean it, then clean it as you have nothing to lose but your time.

Thanks very much Liam; that's very interesting; Can I ask how much a clean and refit costs and who it is you use? I'm a complete novice regarding car mechanics so won't be doing it myself I'm afraid!

I have never had to have it done therefore do not know the costs. I had to have some work done a few weeks back as the power steering resevoir had started to leak and as another forum member was having tick-over trouble with a new E throttle unit I asked how usual the problem was, thus the answer. You, he and and I have '99 C,S or V70's so sooner or later we will all probably encounter the problem.

I use a Volvo specialist in Farnborough, Hants which is a long way from Southampton. I have known the people there for many years and know with certainty that I will get a top quality job done at reasonable cost.

I have a 1999 V70, and I have also had the throttle body replaced. It does seem to be a common point of failure. Fortunately mine was under warranty...

I just posted this under the S80 but maybe I will not get my hands slapped for posting 2 places since it applies 2 places.

I'm Don Willson and have been researching the electronic throttle module failure extensively. Your problem is most likely within the electronic throttle module. To get caught up go to http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showth...=hybrid&t=6026 .
This site discusses what the problem is, what it is not, what VEXED is doing about it. Read all of my posts (set the display mode to HYBRID). There is too much missinformation out there. Volvo has not given any help on this problem.

I, and my connection with about 100 Volvo owners world wide, am trying to force a recall by all means possible.
I would like to enlist any and all persons from the Unided Kingdom and the European community that are having driveability problems.

Check out the above site and come back often. I will be posting some of my documentation and failure analyses this week end.

Come join VEXED (Volvo Enthusiasts eXposing Egregious Design), we need all the members we can get.
