Default 850GLT 20v 2.5 engine dying and not restarting for a short time

I have two problems. My 1992 850GLT 20v 2.5 automatic will start and run for miles ok but if turned off and restarted, after a short while the engine dies. It will not restart until you can hear the petrol pump running, sometimes it is ok but often it dies up to 6 times afterwards, then runs ok, until I turn it off and start it again. The Volvo garage cleaned out the butterfly in the fuel system and we have replaced the fuel relay on the RACs advice, but to no avail.
Secondly we had the gearbox replaced a few years ago, which has been ok, but lately the car will not change gear until it has warmed up, then it is fine with no loss of power.
For both problems the Volvo garages can not find a fault.

Hi,

The starting and running problems do sound as though they are fuel pump related. Just a thought, but could it be that the fuel pump relay is not getting the signal to switch on, rather than it being the relay itself?

On the gearbox issues, I don't recall seeing any threads on these forums on this specific topic, but if you look on the American forums http://forums.swedespeed.com/zeromain you will see several threads describing exactly what you're experiencing. I think the answers given there were related to sticking relays in the gearbox. Fortunately, these are not difficult to get to for a specialist and shouldn't in themselves require gearbox out to do.

Hope these ideas help.

Cheers

Addendum...

I've just looked at your other posts where you mention the fuel relay. If the relay that was changed was at the front of the engine bay around the radiator then it will either have been the main relay or the electric fan relay. The fuel pump relay is under the large cover of the fuse box at the rear of the engine bay. The fuel pump relay is a known problem area on 850's

Checked for any fault codes? The fuel pump is a pink colour and has fuel pump writen on the side and is found as described in the previous post. About £25 from Eurocarparts.
