The suggestion of taking out key cover to replace a 'lost' key can be a bit risky. Moral aspect aside, main dealers and insurers are aware of the historical abuse of this policy benefit. As a result, a lot of main dealers use software to remove all of the existing keys associated with the car before programming the new one. The transponder in the original 'lost' key will no longer communicate with the ignition ring, meaning it won't start the car. A new key from Volvo including programming can cost upwards of £300. It should also be noted that whilst the 'non button' key will open, close and start the car, it will not arm the alarm when it's used to lock the car. You need the button key fob to arm the alarm when locking the car.

Thumbs up

Ok the arguing is very attractive but it is really not helping me with my top post and query and yes, I am a lady, thank you.....well, last time I looked anyway.

I appreciate ALL the answers so far but really need to know what to do next, or if in fact I actually need to do anything at all.

To the person asking about mansplaining....it is when a man explains something very slowly to a woman as 'she may not understand'. But that is not important either LOL

So basically,

Do I really need to spend out and get another key for the buttons?
How can I do this and remain eating for the rest of the year?

Well it depends on what way you look at it. Is the extra expense worth the investment? Older Volvos aren't exactly high on the list of desirable cars to steal. Yes you could argue the point about the alarm and perhaps the insurers would have something to say about it if it ever came to light that the alarm wasn't operational, but it's a lot of money for a key. On the other side of the coin, the convenience of the key fob is hard to beat. My own personal opinion would be to buy a new key fob, but the choice is of course yours.

[QUOTE=LPTJoe;2673818]I wish you were

"Secondly, I've perhaps worded my suggestion badly,"

You most certainly did

"but if one looses a key during the course of a policy where cover is provided for that then that's what the cover is for..".

There is no suggestion of loosing a key during the policy. It was quite clearly never given to the new owner

"It's very telling that in a situation in which a woman who's bought a second hand car finds herself with an expensive problem, your immediate response is to jump to defend and protect a multi-million pound multi national insurance company."

I am not jumping to defend anyone. I find it disappointing that a reply to somebody's issues suggest actions that did not actually take place. All on a public forum.

To the OP I apologise for the reference of HE

If this key is so important to you and it was definitely there at test drive but missing at purchase, why did you purchase or why didn't you negotiate the price down as compensation?
If a key (pun intended) feature went missing between viewing and purchase I'd want a resolution before handing over money.

Perhaps you could womansplain because I don't understand how this has happened.

I may do that in a few months. Many thanks!
